ESC quit in flight
The other day my AP heli lost power and came down real fast and crashed. When it happened only 2000mah had been consumed on 5000mah 12S pack on average 29amps and it showed 46.0V. I know cause I have live telemetry.

My new t-rex 700 AP ship on ACEONE, my camera mount, my 550D and lens is damadged. It can be repaired, but it will take time and some spending on spares and etc. . .

If this was not a Combo Deal then I would not have gotten an CC ICE2 HV120, but it had come with the kit. It looks like a very clever ESC with data logging and computer setup and all that. After the crash the esc seems to work just fine but I will not use it again.

Is it possible to completely "disable cutt offs"?
I have checked and I could not disable it.

It is always easy to blame a mishap on a component, so I would really like to know if it was my esc setup that caused this cut-off.

Cut-off voltage...........= Auto-LiPo
Auto-LiPo Volts/cell...= 3.2
Current Limiting.........= 160A
Cut-off type................= soft cut-off
Throttle type...............= governor
Gov mode..................= simple
gov gain.....................= med

Let me know if there is a mistake I should have avoided.

What was the voltage at cutoff ? Was it 3.2v per cell or something different. I set mine to 3.0 V cutoff.
I would rather damage a lipo than the chopper. Remember, if it reached cutoff, that is under load, so in my misguided opinion 3.0 volt cutoff is fine.
46/12 is 3.8 volts, sounds like the unloaded voltage.

It is possible it shutdown due to overheating not due to voltage.

What was the ambient temperature that day? What did the ESC Datalogging report on the temperature prior to shutdown. Where did you mount the ESC up front or on the rear of the Heli? What Battery Packs are you using and what are there "C" rating?

Looks as though the "Deal" wasn't a deal at all. Junk the CC.

It is possible to effectively disable both voltage and current cutoffs on the CC. The current cutoff can be disabled outright with a menu selection. To disable the voltage cutoff, get out of auto-lipo and into "custom" and choose a voltage that your lipo can never reach, something like 2v per cell (i.e. 24v on a 12S system). Doing this can destroy the esc or the lipo if you don't pay attention and overfly the timer, but to me that is better than an unanticipated cutoff and/or a forced auto.Dr.Don

Since 2006 i lost 4 Hv45's and went threw 3 HV120's before i think i got a good one.
Too afraid to use it.
CC has cost me a ton of cash over the years.

sorry to hear of your high failure rate

we pull about 34 amps in the hover and in ff decent about 19

i have about 6 power gliders all with cc esc sizes from 40 to 125 amp and no problems. now i should say we try not to fly the helis when its over 95 outside but sometimes we dont have that option

our cx has made us a ton of cash and still does so

when it happened outside temperature was 90F
esc was mounted just behind the main mast where recommended
battery pack was 2xTurnigy 5.0 nanotech at 75C
the esc was drawing around 30amps continious
log file indicates 46.0V prior to cut-off

I can not tell if it cut-off because
a-it got too warm
b-the voltage dropped too much
by just looking at the log charts.

I beleive I was not pushing the esc beyond its limits, not even close. This thing is rated 120 and HV. I am really angry it happened to me the way it did.

I will one day build a test heli for this esc and hover it in front of me to see how it behaves. Just joking.
Thanks for your support fellows.

I am on a MacBook Pro. So getting a good looking logfile here was difficult.

While it won't help you now, I always include an EagleTree data logger on any expensive helicopter/multirotor. Mine logs at 10 per secound, Pack voltage, pack current, throttle postion, altitude. I also have the optional sensors for temp, prop speed which I don't use right now.
I can also hook up a couple more servo sensors (these sense the servo commands, not the actual servo position) to see if some problem with the servo controls.
For the price it provides me with good verification of what happened and when it happened after a crash (I have had several).
I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Something is wrong with your log file, the voltage shows an increase during current loads. ??????I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

Here is a sample of a current/voltage plot during a flight. As you can see the battery voltage is dropping during flight/load.
At 2.5 mins into flight I landed for a short period and the pack voltage jumps up, this is normal for the battery from loaded to no load. But during flight the battery is continuing to drop. But your showed voltage increase during load, something is wrong with you data logger.

+1

I use the Jive 120HV and Scorpion Commander Opto 130HV. Both are cool to the touch.

Some heli fliers use this esc with no problems. I failed with mine and I still don't know 100% what I did wrong.

If this could have been avoided by applying meaninglessly different parameters then I feel it should have be highlited in the manual. I also am no fan of cheating an esc to get it to work.

I consider my self an experinced r/c pilot when it comes to Aerial Photography related matters and I was very suprised when this esc cut-off in flight. When it happened AceOne was on "GPS hold mode". I noticed the rotor rpm decay and the heli came down in a perfectly level attitude. Unfortunately I was not able to get it to auto.
Had happened while flying in "manual mode" I would probably notice power loss and reacted accordingly.

More distressing was the fact that I had already received my new Kontronik Jive Esc but some how went on with flying this "unfamous" component.
A well deserved pain.
