How Do You Like Your DX 18???
Like the title says, just curious how people are liking their Spektrum DX 18's?

I had one in my hands when they came out and wasn't real impressed with the "feel" and look of it but want to try one for the telemetry and new features.

Currently flying with a JR 12X.

Thanks!

I like the DX18 very well so far. Particularly like the flexible handling of timers, complete switch assignability, inclusion of an SD card for dumping model programs to the computer, ability to do firmware updates (although there has been no need for that so far). Gimbals are easy to adjust and feel good to me. Hard antennas are less easy to damage, or at least mine on the old 9303 was quite vulnerable. Also, for those of us who have spent too much time on firing ranges, this thing has a timer buzzer I can actually hear. (Also vibrates if you choose this option.)

12X is a great TX, no question. But it is long in the tooth and lacks some of the straightforward features that are common now, such as the SD card.

My 12X dates from 2008, it is ready for some Horizon Hobby love so, I bought a DX18 which shall get into my hands next week.
I planned to use it while 12X is in the SPA.

My DX7 in much older and ready to become a full time "buddy box" transmitter.

I bought DX18 due to all features listed; in paper, it looks pretty good and I am not expecting it to be a 12X so, I will not be disappointed !!

Definitely on my shopping list

Does anyone know if you can get a fold out Tx support stand for the DX18?
The handles don't seem conducive because of its square section shape for the accessories after market stands that are available.

Blax1,

Be careful about the idea of mounting anything on the DX18 "handle". It isn't just a handle; it is also the second of 2 antennas. You probably shouldn't mount anything on it.

Thanks for all the info and feedback guys

Love my 12X but it is lacking on some modern features as mentioned here and I'm starting to get the "idea" of a more simple exterior and lighter weight transmitter, especially to gain all those neat features.

Picked one up from my LHS already

Couple quick observations:

The DX 18 is more ergonomic, the gimbal sticks even point outwards to the sides slightly giving it a bit more of a natural feel.

The 12X boots up faster, maybe by a second or few.

The 12X is also a lot louder as far as the sound of the radio itself while transmitting the signal, the DX 18 is silent while the 12X purrs like a kitten Not sure why

I like the menus in the 18, just like the 12 as far as navigation. Putting the instructions with the box in the closet

Also the DX 18 has an inactivity auto shut off which I thought the 12 should of had

Plus the li-po is very cool.

The lipo is nice, but the charger is internal and fed from a low rate 12v power supply with a wall plug. A full charge is close to overnight. I don't leave any lipo charging overnight no matter who made the lipo or the charger. So, you can charge it slowly while somebody is available to watch over it, or pull the lipo out and charge it faster with an external charger. It runs a long time on a charge though.Dr.Don

If you pull it out of the Tx and charge it you do not want to put more than 200ma to it.The balancer and charge termination are built into the circuit in the pack itself. It is not designed to have large amounts of current passed through it.

Thanks for that Dr Don, I did read that somewhere, but I thought I'd ask I hate lying the Tx down in wet grass or muddy conditions when cranking my nitro or plugging in batteries etc, maybe Spektrun will come up with something, some great info here guys the more I read the more I like it, as for lipo's what about phones and laptops even cameras are lipo these days.
BUT I do understand the safety concerns.

Your point about so many OEM equip setups being powered by Lithium cells is valid. It does kind of apply in this case as well.Im convinced that 99.9 and some % of LiPo failures are related to user misuse or abuse.Flightpacks are a different animal as well. The OEM Tx pack isnt simply a LiPo flightpack with Tx leads on it.The chemistry/design makes it a Tx pack that operates at very low C levels. They are designed and tested to operate at levels of 1/10-1/20C.Alot of the time a max of 1 or 2C.By the same token they may not be designed to have a high C rating for charge either. If used as designed its near impossible to put them into a "thermal runaway" condition and have a fire.
For the most part the argument goes back to "I want I want" and "I have a better way than the engineers envisioned".If you use it the way it was designed, engineered and tested and follow the recommendations in the manual(we all read these right?) there shouldnt be a problem.

I couldn't be any happier with my DX18. I've had it since 2 days after it was released. It is a fabulous radio. Just using it on helis there's not much need for all the extra channels and features, but last week I set up a Y6 Multirotor with video downlink, OSD, and telemetry. Got a chance to really play with some of the mixing and extra channels with that. I have 9 channels setup on it, and I was able to get everything on the switches I wanted, and operating the way I wanted as well. It's really intuitive, the battery lasts forever, feels great in my hands, and is an awesome radio.

I came from a 14MZ and 8FG, and like this significantly better. It is an amazing radio.

Got my DX18 Yesterday.

Programing is very friendly.
You need to adventure to find all it's potential!

All features I thought of and then some !

Gimbal's springs on the stiff side but adjusted them by expanding inner springs, though call since my guaranty is marginally expired by doing so.

I will use it next Saturday and report back.
It is already programed for SG90, vibe 50 and Aurora.

12X goes to horizon Hobby in a quest of love on Thursday.

DX 18 is definitely a superior radio to the 12 X, I will probably end up selling mine.

I like mine - got one of the first ones and have been using it since.

Like dx8
- low latency
- telemetry with vibe and audio alert
- super long battery life

Improvements on dx8
- gimbals
- improved ergonomics (great for big hands)
- much improved screen makes setup easier
- rubber covered scroll wheel
- fixed antenna(s)

Dislikes
- not easy to fast charge battery if needed (never had to with dx8 but would be nice)

Coming from 14mz, dx7(se), 12x, dx8.
- Rob
