Ive got 2 Align starters for sale.
I'll take them! I have some smooth bearings that need trashed and some cement that needs breaking up in my driveway.

+1 on the crappiness of the Sullivan wand. Mine would defeat the OWB in the heli somehow and I was never able to get the machine started. In desperation, I drilled a hole through it on my drill press to kill the OWB in the wand (took 3 bits to do it lol) and locked it in place with a pin. That worked until the pin started to come loose and I got fed up with it.

In final desperation, I just bought the align starter and threw away the sullivan wand and airplane starter (well put the starter behind the seat in the truck). My starter woes have been over ever since, though not my fight with the align OWB in the clutches lol. But I'll never use an airplane starter conversion again. I can start anything I plug it into, even a 105 with the 3S batt at 3.9v per cell and I never have to worry about smashing engine parts again.

The only crappiness with the align starter is the supplied wand is made of kind of soft metal, the ball wears out pretty fast. I think Ron Lund has a replacement wand for it tho that's made out of harder metal...

The Align starter. Is there a difference between the yellow and the black versions besides color?
I'd like to know that too.
Mine is black and yellow by the way.
I literally never use the word literally right.

No difference as far as I know. I have to say, for my purposes the Align starter has worked great. Mine is three years old and the lipo that is in it'd about 4 years old. I did finally have to replace the start shaft after the one way gave out but that is fine. I took the old start shaft and turned the thready end down to fit the cup of my yellow Sullivan that is powered by a 4s 4000 mah batt. I built that rig up as a backup but he Align has been working fine. I have started 50cc gasser planes when they couldn't get it started by flipping the prop. I don't know about starting 90 size and above heli motors as I have not done that but for the average user the Align works well.

Yup,ditch the Align "AKA Jackhammer" starter ..Its the worst starter you can buy..When you see someone that talks up the Align starter switch to a good/real starter, the story changes about how good they are..
Buy a Torquemaster or Sullivan starter.I have a Torquemaster 90 with a 4S lipos and Sullivan shaft, love it...
As for the Sullivan shaft, its the best shaft $$ can buy..They had a issue with the tips stripping out but that was with the old one..Doesn't happen with the new ones as Sullivan took care of it..

LMAO @ bkervaski last comment ...

It amazes me how long the Align starter threads get. Never thought threads like these could break out about something as boring as a starter lol....

As for the jackhammering, it's a side-effect of having a lightweight starter, but the cost is worth it. The hammering goes into your hand and not so much into the starting mechanism.

Those gigantic airplane starters OTOH, absorb the hammering of the compression, but also transmit it into the clutch OWB in the heli - You know that faint rattling sound you hear coming out around the clutch bell that you always think is something loose or scraping? Yep, exactly, that's your OWB being getting the $$$$ beat out of it by that 5hp monster starter that could spin over a full scale motor lol.

The Align doesn't give this problem (just makes your hand feel like it's been buzzed by a old 4-stroke dirt bike for a little while lol).

Finally, the auto-cut-off feature pays for itself the first time it gets used. It's already saved my 105 from a hydraulic-lock situation that happened when I was first setting it up and doing the breakin. Gave me a free $500 engine, where a huge dynatron might not have. Good enough for me

Reread my post. For awhile I was taking both my starters but in the end the Align always was used. Why? Because it is easier to use. Yeah, my Sullivan on 4s is awesome and spins it up real nice but it doesn't really matter when you have en engine tuned well enough to start almost immediately. I have not even charged the battery in my Align since sometime in December. Probably should get to charging that thing, I only have one green light left.

align since 2010

one bump 95% of the time, if your motor doesn't start it's the operator or your motor tuning.

I find if motor tune or glow plug off, nothing will start it. ditto if flooded / hydrolock

closing...usually end user complaining about end user short comings not being fixed by product

Yeah, that was the other reason I built my Sullivan rig was starting in our cold temps. I will say it certainly does a better job than the align when it it 30 degrees out but the align does good enough for me.
