There are many other options other than what was posted above. More information is needed to make a better recommendation.

What radio do you use?
What are people around you flying?
What are you looking for? ie, ease of set-up, flight characteristics, etc.

My choice is the 8fg super with a CGY750 fbl system.

If you want easy, then I would go with a BeastX.

I'm biased. I love my GT5, but it takes some patience and time to understand it- the directions are not detailed.

Desired features
What is your flying style?
Are there any featres you might like such as self leveling bailout, governor etc?
My preference SK540, BEAST, SK720
Skookum have more features and adjustability than Beast. The 540 is in the same price range and has great setup wizards.
Beast is easy to setup without a computer but more limited in features and tuning parameters. Tail setup is nonintuitive and different than most but once dialed in is good.
The 720 adds accelerometers which allows self leveling and eventually Return to home and hold in position features.

There are other options as well depends on your needs and preferences. If you set up the 3GX you should be able to handle most setup as they are easier than the 3GX IMHO

Since his ESC is toast, and it took out his 3GX system, why not replace the ESC with a CC ICE 100 and the smoked 3GX with an AR7200BX, with a DSMx satellite?

That gives him the BEASTx with an integrated 7-channel RX, and a DSMx satellite since this is flying in 550 heli.

His transmitter didn't blow up, and this may not be his only heli linked to that transmitter.

Trying to sell him a Futaba radio when he only needs to replace an ESC and his 3GX/Spektrum satellite setup is just plain brain dead.
