Alright here my problem, I have a GY520 gyro and trying to set it up on a Trex-600. I have used the CIU-2 to setup the GY520 with the servo which is a BLS251. Everything seems fine however the “Limits” settings don’t take.

On the Software page is shows the limits when it read from the gyro, when I go to manual programing push the buttons and watch the light show, again it goes to the limits I’ve set and everything seem fine till It’s out of programing and then the rudder will only move about 30% left and right from center and not to the limits set.

My radio is T8FG and it was set in AVCS mode but I’ve also tried Normal. I am very burnt out on this problem been working it for 3 weeks now, and this is the only thing hold it down from its first flight!

Thanks for any input guys!

That is normal. The limits are set in a programming mode, but once you leave that mode you will not see the servo move that much. This is because you are looking at it on the bench. In the air it can move to the full limits as required to keep the tail where you want it.

Do double check that the rudder is moving the correct direction and that the compensation is moving correctly (left rudder when you move the nose to the right).

Thanks for the input, I guess I'll take it to the field tomorrow and see what happens then.

I'm betting on a successful maiden!! Like I sad, just double check that the tail is moving the correct direction and you will be good to go.

Well I ran it up in the backyard which is a size of a postage stamp, but the tail did move the right way. I do need make some adjustments on the rod, when the power is increased she wanted a ton left rudder.

Are you in AVCS mode? If so then there should be no need to hold rudder. If you were in normal mode then you might need some rudder to stay straight. There are 2 schools of thought. One is to adjust the rudder linkage to hold straight in normal mode. The other is to simply fly in AVCS mode and don't worry about what it does in normal mode. On my 520 I adjust it to hold straight in normal mode, re-check the endpoints, and then fly in AVCS from there on out.

Well thanks again for all the information, and yes I was in AVCS mode and I did try the norm for laughs, they seem to be the same now after the tail rod adjustment.

I took a 550 rod and cut it down a little bit and now I have a carbon tail rod. I should stayed stock on this ESP till I got the first couple flights done and then played with that. I'll let you know if the skids break off the grass tomoorrow and again thank you everyone!

What kind of gain are you running in AVCS (heading hold)?? If it is too low the tail will not hold and will tend to drift. Too high and it will be "twitchy". I generally start at around 35% to 40% and adjust from there. Also make certain that there is NO sub-trim in the radio and NO trim on the transmitter.

I am glad I read this post. just checked and I had 30 for sub-trim in my radio.

no wonder the gy520 would not hold.

and yes no sub trim and or trim at all after Heading hold mode is initialized...it does start in HH mode right? Look for solid read light

I really wonder if you have your switch,or radio programed right.
I don't think I would have ever got it on my own, being this was my first Futaba. This is for a 401. But it should get you in the ballpark.

Found the the problem, one was I always copy a profile from a old helicopter and then rename it. Well on my other two helicopters my gain is on channel 5. On my 600 it's on channel 7. So never reaaly look at the Fuction menu Gyro was on ch 5 and not ch 7, after that change it was miraculous and work great. Again thanks for all the input!

GY520 limit setting blues (can I ask another question?)
Greetings— I am setting up someone else's T-rex 500 and am programming the GY520 manually with the switch. When I try to set the tail servo travel limits I keep getting a red flashing light. The manual tells me that if the gain in either direction is less than 50% the light will flash off and on red (which it does) and the setting won't take.

In such a case the recommendation is to bring the tail servo link ball in one hole (to reduce the amount of travel) and try again. Thing is, it is already on the innermost hole of an Align DS520 servo, which is about 10 MM out from the center of the output arm.

I will continue to tinker so see if I can coax another percent or so of travel to put the first limit at or above 50%, but perhaps someone who has been through this has a suggestion?

Thanks,

Glen
