Guys don't knock Zippy lipos, these did not spontaneously combust on their own. I've purposely punctured (for fun, it's like fireworks) many old used lipos and this is *exactly* how they behave once punctured. First you get hissing and white smoke, then comes the flames. The crash caused the puncture and fire, no doubt about it.

My kudos to the pilot, totally keeping your cool and taking it all with stride and humor. When stuff like this happens getting bent out of shape and mad is not going to make the situation any different. You rebuild, and fly again another day.

Woh, no one is talking about the batteries. Don't jump on the battery band wagon. This is about the cause not the aftermath.

I'm voting mechanical tail failure. In the video you can hear the pilot hit throttle hold once the tail lets go. If the power or radio system took a hit then there would not have been a throttle hold. Also the main rotor disk would have gone crazy.

Read this quote, yes someone brought up the batteries as suspect...
How old we're those Zippies, and which spec where they?

AKA Rodiskameoph. There is no cure. Only prevention. It can strike at any time. There is .59 cents saving you from life and death. That's right. That little plastic link saves your life every time your flying at yourself.

I was just wondering how long you were going to let that flame on the skids keep going before you blew it out

Thinking...he's going to blow it out anytime..waiting...waiting...waiting...still burning...waiting...

Thought it was kinda funny you were inspecting it while it was still burning.

I'm pretty positive it wasn't the ball links from the tail rod snapping off either. If any of you have felt the Goblin ball links you'd know that they are very difficult to put on and pop off, though the move very smoothly once they are on. Of course, it hit the ground boom first which caused the boom to break and from that the ball link came off and the belt came off the pulley.

lol, yeah, it was the thick rubber bands that strap down the batteries that were still burning, not the skids. I suppose I did let those burn for a while, but they didn't seem to be burning anything.

It really is difficult to tell what exactly happened with the fire and all. I don't want people trying to take this as an opportunity to flame on products...there has been enough flames already.

Tail did blow out and failed and battery punctured when heli hit the ground . What the cause of tail blowing out could be many things but does look mechanical .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

That's awesome man, thanks very much. Hope I didn't almost cause you to get in a car accident with my "Tools for your box" tech tip a few weeks back. I've been told it nearly caused accidents and have been reprimanded by a few folks that already had bruised ribs or back pains.
