What equipment are you flying? Most telemetry systems have either an airpseed sensor or GPS (which also can produce ground speed).

got one for sale here:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1659870

you can put it to an empty channel with a switch and take speed measurements or it will just record the highest speed

GPS sensors are typically optional.

When I mentioned GPS, I was referring to an optional sensor that can be used with a system that has telemetry capability (i.e. the Hitec Aurora 9, Futaba 18MZ, and Spektrum DX7s, DX8, DX10t, and DX18).

Most Garmin hand held GPS systems will record highest speed. I'm sure most smart phones have some sort of app for that aswell. When testing this, I would try to fly in a straight line to get most accurate top speed. Full throttle in a dive doesnt count in my book.

Just remember that 'airspeed' sensors indicate the speed through air while speed produced from a 'GPS' sensor will indicate speed over ground.
