Observation Hover
Here is the way I had it described and clarified...
It is a medium height hover (about 25-30' up) at about mid field so the judges do not have to hurt thier necks watching it, usually nose in, and it is held steady for a minimum of 10 seconds from beginning to end..
It is as if the pilot is looking at something on the ground... you will see the "News" heli's using this a lot... it just sits there!!!!

lol..

that works

Next.. does the 45deg set need to be back to back? On the sheets I got from doorman they have the freestyle between the climb out and landing?

Thanks again..

I was practicing this morning and the same guy that moves the circle must be hiding in a gopher hole at our field! Fricking Fracking.............

Joel.. dude you are in the sprit of this big time! And your helis are KILLER looking. If your flying is on this could be your game! Insert smack talk here...BUT. your going to have to fight your way past your old buddy Grimracer to get it done!.. Good luck SUCKA!

Ok smack talk over. Lets play SCALE HELIS!

Flying Sheet Error
It does look like it is out of the proper order to me...

Using the numbers on the sheet as it is, should be 1,2,5,3,4,6,7

Will have to get that info to Darrell to see if he can correct it on his.. thanks for pointing it out...
Hey Grim, you better play nice with Mr SMOOOOOTH.... he is that good!!!!! BUT we have not seen your "moves" yet so let the games begin!!!!!!!!!

Hum.. lets see uncle Morty..something about a broken thumb....

talk out the side of your mouth here"... yea see.. thats it.. see..

Im not great but I bet Im better after this gig! And what I really want from this are new buds and a better understanding of setup and flying a scale heli. I hope this brings up my confidence level to commit to a "real-nice" build.

The translational landing is done after the 45 degree climb out by most. Then start the freestyle part of your flight.

I do want to take a moment to thank my retina doctors over the last number of years in particular Dr. Patel. Im not that old but have macular degeneration (im too young for that but we have no other name for it) and now have permanent double vision. What you see as one I see as two. DO I GET DOUBLE POINTS! Lol……………wait.. that’s double deductions too!................
Without their skill and expertise this none of this would be possible. That includes the RC boat racing I do as well.
THANK YOU DR. PATEL for not giving up on me!
One advantage.. Two hot chicks, per hot chick, at the Advantage booth.. Nice eh!

Well guys, you know that flying for fun is one thing. Flying in a competition is a whole 'nother ball game. I've only flown the NATS once, and that was to give it a try. I'm glad I participated in it, even though I gave myself a stomach ache over it. It's amazing how the pressure of competition can turn something so fun into something so nerve wracking.

Of course we want to do well, and of course, we want to look good in front of our peers. Who wouldn't want to do that? And that is not easy under pressure!!

I give a lot of credit to anyone who competes on that flight line and gives it a go. It's deceptively simple from the outside, and just totally different when you're the one actually competing.

Oh the wind.. yes, Grim, as you know Muncie can be a heart break. Beautiful and calm one moment, and thundering storm the next. Hopefully we'll be blessed with the calm weather and maybe even a small breeze to keep us cool under that hot Indiana sun. Or maybe, we should just fly from under the scale tent. Hmmm...

I pulled the DJI stabilization out of my Air Crane a few weeks ago so that it would be IRCHA scale event legal. It's back to the SK-360! So my plan is to fly with that. If I have time, I'll put the DJI into my Maxi Joker again so I can show how it works, but no guarantee. I haven't done the re-install yet, and there's not a ton of time left. Now if I just gave up on sleep.. hmm...

See you all soon.

Flying In Competition...
Joel, I think you summed it up quite nicely.... BUT, I think that Paul really explained it perfectly last year..
It was his first time at the NATS..I was his caller.. I could tell he was nervous, but I just kept talking to him to try to keep him calm during his flight, which be the way, he did quite well... when he was done and back under the tent, I asked him what he thought... His response was that he was really glad to be there, and he had learned a couple of things that he did not know prior to his 1st flight..
(1) He did not know that each finger could sweat individually!!!
(2) He really never knew that it was possible to hold his breath
for 5 minutes!!!!!
Best explanation I have ever heard, and I still LMAO when I think about it...
But that is what makes it so much fun!!!!
He has been bitten and there is no keeping him away now!!!!!

See you all there.... Stan

You remember quite well Stan! That is exactly what I said...oh and one other thing..."how did the judges keep moving to landing circle"?

Joel is right, when you are out goofing around...no big deal. Drop 3 judges behind you and its is a whole different situation.

But that is why you have to do it...Wow...like skydiving...scares you to death and you wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

Oh and one other thing...everybody competing thinks the judges are moving that circle too...not just the newbie!

one week from today Stan and I will pulling into Muncie...here we go!!!!

I have so many questions but hate to ask here cuz i hate to type and like I stated earlier Im a slow learner.. (holding a stick of dynamite in one hand with the other missing!)and do much better with one on one.

Anyway.. Im going to keep trying to hit it hard and do the best I can.

See everybody soon!

Another 3 flights last night. Winds were light from the south west (over my left shoulder).

Its coming along. Flight are in the 4 min 30 sec range.

The sun was JUST starting to get low (to my left) any position of the heil to my left made it hard to see. As much as I like military ships an olive scheme might not be best for competition.. for me...

Hoping for a few more tonight.

Look forward to hanging out with everybody soon.
