Does MA publish an actual pitch range for this head? Personally I wouldn't know what to do with -10 to 10 let alone 30 degrees total.

I would take HeliNerd's head one step further and use the Tempest 3D blade grip arms rather than the Tempest FAI ones. The 3D variant would put a control ball right in the middle of the head pointing straight out away from the main shaft. You could use the double balls here maybe.

I have a Fury Tempest FAI and a FURY Tempest 3D, and even though the grips and had block are the same, the grip arms are different.

How much range is the whiplash getting out of that head? Are the similar?

The Whiplash swashdriver has much better geometry and can get +/-14 degrees collective pitch, no problem. The Whiplash head is a bit beefier as well (incl 9mm spindle).

Before puting a lot of FBL mod $'s into an older MA heli you might want to consider just buying a new FBL Whiplash. This heli is properly designed for FBL from the git-go, so it will be easier to setup. Also, you'll get a much higher resale price if you decide to sell it later. Just a thought.

Cheers,

I got a really good deal on the fury. I used to have one and loved the way it flew. I have every intention of buying a whiplash probably towards the end of summer.

Not sure what the total pitch range is on mine, but when I set it up from scratch, it was somewhere in the low-mid teens each way. I've limited it to 10.5 degrees for personal preference.

If that is the case, maybe you should consider just flying your Fury stock flybarred for now. I'm sure it will still fly very nice. Save your coin for a FBL Whiplash and all the newer/better electronics (servos, voltage regulators) that this will probably need.

If you've already bought a GY750 you can probably use it as a GY701. I think you just plug the rudder and throttle (if governor is to be used as well) directly to 750 unit and all other cyclic servos directly to Rx and this setup should work fine.

Later, you can move the GY750 over to your FBL Whiplash and pick up a good tail gyro for your Fury. The market price for used tail gyro's is very cheap right now (thanks to the FBL craze). I picked up a Fut Gy520 last month for $50, lol!

Anyway, just a thought.

I think the 750 can be used this way. It may depend on wheather or not I have the head sold.
I have gone in the past two months from no helis or equipment to two fully capable flying machines, complete with electronics and field equipment. There is no way on this or any other planet that my wife will let me get another helicopter.
Maybe by the end of the summer....we will see!!

That's why you hide one when the new one gets there for the money I spent making my stratus electric and flybarless I wish I had just saved and got a whiplash! I'm keeping my fury expert and the E stratus for nostalgia purposes, but I want something more purpose designed like the whippy.

I will own a whiplash! The other thing to consider here is that I haven't flown a helicopter in 7 years. I will probably remember how to do it, I would like to get a little more stick time before getting reckless with a $2500 machine

Whiplash will have to wait. I bought a nib tempest 3d. It looks like I have most of the parts I will need to convert this one to fbl. Can't believe there was still one of these things unbuilt. 8.18 GR I might even try to squeeze a 120 in her.
Sewer do you have a part number by any chance for the double balls you speak of?

If you have a new Tempest 3D kit, the you will already have the double balls. From memory, I think they go on the flybar see-saw in the original build, and of course if you are going flybarless, then you won't need those bits.

I did indeed pick up a ys120 today. I hope it fits!! I will use bls253 cyclic with the MAflybarless head. Bls251 on the tail in the tempest and I will use the converted tempest head on the extreme with the ys80. How does that sound?

Alright here is the deal! I got the ma flybarless head and have started putting it together. The instructions leave out a few of the parts that are included in the bags. I was able to figure out the fiber blade spacers, but there was a brass colored tube in there about 1 1/4 inches long I don't see it listed anywhere! What is it for, anyone know?

Anyone that has used the tempest head for the conversion. How did you get the phasing pins out of the head block. I suppose I could just cut and trim or maybe heat the block and pull them out. What did you guys do?

I tried getting them out with heat and brute force, but gave up before I damaged the block.

In the end, I just cut them off flush with a junior hacksaw and filed smooth.
