I flew my Dirty Birdy for the first time with the 11x8 prop today. Things are better.
I'm still getting used to the plane. This is about the sixth 5-minute flight on this bird.

Video coming in a few minutes.

crappy video/ crappy flight, but here it is.
I'll post another video when I'm more comfortable with the plane and show you a smoother flight.

sounds like it's at 1/2 throttle, like it's not unloading. Odd.

Is it "on the pipe"?

I've read that tuning a piped engine can be tricky and requires pipe length mods (changed at the connection to the manifold) and can also require playing with the prop, mixture and glow plug.

Good luck!

Nice flight and field looks good too. It does sound a little low on rpm but it still looks like it is pulling well.

I don't have a tuned pipe for it. I figured I'd fly the plane to see if I actually like it before dumping a bunch of money in it.
I have a stock muffler on it now.

From what I've learned about the 61SF engine, it is designed to run at lower RPM's. I put an 11x8 prop on it, and it is definitely an improvement over the 11x6 prop I had a week ago.

I think the engine is running a little rich.

"on the pipe" was meant losely. Just meant that it still sounded a hair rich. What level of nitro are you running???
I had the heli headed version of that motor in a couple different planks and it pulled a lot more RPM's than that. BUT... I was running a Pitts style muffler. So maybe that made a bit of difference.

You might have a pretty good combo going as it is. It's quiet and moves out with authority. A pipe would definitely take it up a notch but doesn't look all that necessary for now.

R U running an APC prop??? They're ugly, but I used to swear by those things. Made a huge difference on my last 2 60 sized planks.

ahhhh the memories
Yep yep, had one with the fiberglass fuselage and foam core wings. had rhom air retracts and a st bluehead. Was my first pattern plane also.. Guess what i still have it complete. The tubing for the retracts are hard and brittle and I suspect the retracts themselves are frozen but a little work could get her going.. Ahhh the memories of the good ole days.

Thanks for the reminder.

Johnny

I always take a large trash bag with me!!!
