G4 Build Report
I am replacing my R90se with a G4. So far I like the design a lot. The build is pretty easy but the manual is very concise, so read it carefully and a couple steps ahead; I had to take things apart twice.
Also some places are not clear as to Nitro or Electric version and the instruction are all inclusive for both types.

Notes:
1 YS engines need PV1625 ( Cooling Fan Housing OS/YS)
2 JR Servos need PV1623-J (servo horn collar)

Issues thus far:

- Some bags were missing labels

- Missing the large balls for the end of the control arms (the arms arms are sold as a set, sot you can't just buy the balls.

- auto gear was warped and hit the clutch bell, tries to heat and straighten, to no avail

--- frame holes for bottom main shaft support bearing were off and had to be elongated to get a smooth mesh

+ tail went together very nicely

+ head went together nicely and is the familiar TT design

I will keep posting my progress

regards,

Thom

Nice! I'm really considering upgrading my R90SE to a new G4. First I've heard of problems with parts in the kit. I've heard a lot of good about the way it goes together and fit and finish is on point. Maybe QC issues. Have you contacted whomever you purchased it from?

The main gear was initially machined, as it needs to be to have nicely meshed helical arrangement, but while talking to Gary Wright at Birmingham I noticed that one of his main gears was molded. Apparently TT has gone to molded for the main gear as well as the tail drive gear to save money.

If the main gear wobbles it will have to be replaced. Looking at Gary's helicopters proved interesting. His preproduction model had both main gear and tail drive gear machined. Then the first run of kits (second?, third?) had machined main gears, molded tail drive gears, (mine is in this group). Now apparently they have gone to molded for both gears. Bad idea for the helical.

Unfortunately the cost for me to make main gears is too high to be practical, although Vic Campbell and I may be able to combine our machines to make them at a more reasonable cost.

It seems that Qc is an issue with TT. i have 2 x50 kits that had problems out the box. One being the main shaft hole issue amongst others. I wont own a new 90 strictly that the $$ is too high. Although it is a bad mofo fo sho!!!TT X50 Nitro

I started thinking the price of these had come down. But the reason is,I have been looking at them on A-Main. It seems A-Main has them over 100 dollars cheaper than Tower (their distributor )
Am I overlooking something,or am I right?

Fred, it's being in the know. I'm a member at tower hobbies for 9.95 a year and I get some very good discounts.
Example: X50 amainhobbies 379.00, same thing at tower hobbies is 414.00 with a 60.00 discount, so 354.00.

G4 amainhobbies 879.00 Tower hobbies 999.00 with discount of 150 is 850.00

Both have free shipping. To me tower hobbies is a better deal.

I'm not associated with towerhobbies. I order some parts from amainhobbies also.

Edit: Should have been. $150.00 discount.

I've been a member since 1994. I wonder if it has something to do with how much you spend with Tower Hobbies. You might want to give them a call and ask them what it takes. Its called 'Gold Preferred Plus'.

More build issues...

The fixed length rods need to be adjustable as the lengths for my servos don't fit (JR 8917HV). The holes are very slightly oval but it's not enough.

More as I go... Anybody have building or setup tips, we sure could use them.

Regards,

Thom

HI

Could you tell me what is the weight of your heli, please.
TT says 4.4kg RTF, sorry TT but it's a bit difficult to believe....I really would like to know the weight ready to fly.
Could you make a pic with a scale?

Thanks for your help.

I am really interested in G4, but looks a bit heavy to me and may be I am wrong, just want to be sure before "adding to cart", and that's surprising how difficult it is to know the weight of the g4, some told me heavy, some light....More precision would be appreciate.

I am a gold preferred plus member and I get 135 off if I spend up to 999 bucks and 150 for a thousand and up. I also have a os engine rebate for 75 bucks and it happens to include tt products so the trick is to use those ad numbers when tower does free shipping. I would add something like a wheel collar to the order to bring it into the 150 off realm. I would do this when they are doing free shipping. Sooo figure 999.99 plus a 2.25 wheel collar equals 225 off. 1002.24-225 with free s/h =774.24. Not bad. It's all how u work the system. Gold preffered is a monetary thing. I am not a member of super saver. Tower CS will give you the details if u call them. Or just use your buddies preffered discount. But don't forget to pay him/her first. LololRIP Roman Pirozek Jr.

I just finished the build. It comes in at 10lb 6oz dry.
I'm running +/- 12 collective and +/- 9 on cyclic! With no binding, wow! Working with my LHS on the defect, I'll let y'all know how Greatplanes deals with defective kits.

For those interested in weight:

YS91SR-3DS, Hatori SB19
Spectrum 7100R
JR8917HV on cyclic
JR8900G on tails
Quark gyro
Fromoco 5400 lion pack
Radix 710 SB (~180 gr)

I plan on an FBL version in the fall with a SpartanRC FBL unit.

ThomStilwell: That's basically the same electronics setup I use on my R-90SE (FB) - except I use a regulator with the LiPo.

My 90SE weighs in at a "portly" 11.3lbs (5.1kg)empty

Hope you have the same experience I did. I called them about 3 separate issues concerning my X50. They took care of each issue free of charge, and no hassle.
