I only play when it sky rockets, which is about once or twice a year. Just out of curiousity how much of that will be taxed if it happened to be a single winner?
The canadian government doesnt tax lotto winnings.... guess the figure we need to fix our igloos up.
I would rather be in a boat, with a drink on the rocks, then in the drink, with a boat on the rocks!

I was talking to my father in law about this and his reasoning was that he was using the money to buy lottery tickets that he used to buy cigarettes with.
Is what I find funny about that is what most people who smoke spend on them. At $5 a day that's about $150 per month. Invest that for a working lifetime and not only will you not have the health issues resulting from smoking but you will also have a half decent retirement. Not the best but better than most, and far better than the money you will get from the gov...

If you want to get really crazy take both the money you would spend on car payments and the money you would spend on smoking (Average for both would be about $500 a month). With the averages we have seen over the past 50 years in a working lifetime you would have a little over 2 mill in the bank at retirement.

You can argue the numbers all day long but in the end your chances of having a half decent retirement working this plan is far greater than spending $125 a week for the rest of your life playing lotto...

BTW my $5 ticket I bought last night only had one number on it On the bring side my 401K and IRA did go up a little bit last week

The payout is $340M after taxes so the 3 winners will get just over $110M each.

Statistics show that most lottery winners have blown the lot within 5 years!

Which is not surprising when you think people are spending money on a bet they will win at 174,000,000:1 odds

When I first came to America 20 years ago I played the lottery every week and one week I won over $1000! Then I thought about it and realized that I had just got back all the money I had spent on lottery tickets since I arrived. I haven't bought one since.

Normally I would not post in a thread about the lottery, (maybe I would) but yesterday I was approched on a site about getting into a pool. There are 2 guys that collected over $6000.00 @ $50.00 a shot and I noticed they were here today. These were not CEO types either. My comments all stand!!!

I am a realist, and I have a lots of ambition but I like my investments to have a 50/50 shot of a return. If you want to get somewhere in life you need to WORK for it and I realized that early in life. There are a few winners but there are alot more LOOSERS.

If buying lottery tickets make you happy and fufulls your dreams you are very simple minded. Go for it DUDE.

I got all the numbers, even the mega ball!!

Its just too bad they were on different lines I did win $10 on one line though. A while back I got 3 #'s plus the mega ball for $150. I dont play that often though.

That sure is better than a poke in the eye.

The only time I play is when it is really big money.
And my wife reminds me.

Yup, they're crazy. I knew a guy that won 10 million on a scratch ticket. Every November his yearly check would come in and he'd blow it on scratch tickets. He would literally buy boxes and boxes of tickets and we'd have scratching parties!

You haven`t heard of the obama plan, it`s called sit on your ass and do nothing but collect unemployment , food stamps, and every other free thing you can get for doing nothing.

I was brought up that your supposed to work for what you get but it doesn`t seem to work anymore.

Scott,
That really hasn't anything to do with wanting to win the lottery.

I would think that most of us on this forum work for what we have.
We all fly toy helicopters.
