My first 7HV
Ordered my first 7HV today. This is my first foray into electric/flybarless helicopters. I've been flying R50, and an R90-3D for a few years and recently also an X50. Recently, I decided it was time to leave nitro behind for good. Yup, I'm done having to windex my helis before leaving the field for the day. Done!!

I ordered the 7HV kit with the scorpion hkiii-560 motor, v-bar 5.2, turnigy k-force 120 ESC, Outrage 9180 HV's on cyclic, Outrage 9188 HV on the tail, and will run radix 690mm blades. I'm expecting this heli to rock. A few of my friends have the 7HV and I've flown one of them already. Looking forward to getting mine in the air and beating the crap out of it.

If things go well, I may even buy a second one before summer.

Will tell ya what I think after I've broken it in a bit.

Rob.

Sounds awesome. You will love it. You picked the right heli for your first endeavor into electrics and FBL. What pinion and FBL setup are you planning on running with that setup?

Maiden flight
The new 7HV survived her maiden flight today. I took it easy on her today. Next weekend, I won't be so nice!

Thanks VKGT. It is very easy to see while flying. The canopy is big too. This heli has a lot of stage presence. When it's in the air, people take notice.

Sunday morning finished up the last little bit of set up in the V-bar. Did a trim flight and a tail opto flight. Now I'm ready to really fly this beast for the first time.

Walk it out to the flight line, start my spool up and.....click, click, click, click, click......DAMNIT!!!! Broken tooth on the main gear. Not sure why this happened. I set the mesh just right, even had other guys at the field double check for me. We all felt like the mesh was just right. Yes we paper tested it. Soft start is set correctly and works very well.

Another buddy said something about my governor gain may be set a few points too high. Thereby allowing the power from the batteries to hit the maotor and pinion way to fast. Anybody else heard of that being an issue. I ask because I don't want to go through several main gears trying to find out. Any ideas?

Did you check the mesh at several spots around the main gear or just in one spot? Most of the folks that have had this found that it was a bit tight in one spot. One guy did find a build up of loc-tite on the frame around the motor mount causing it to be at a slight angle.

No. We checked the main gear all the way around, and I use the loctite sparingly. I never glob it on the bolt or screw.

Now that I think about it, the very first time I ever tried to spool up this heli I did not have the soft start engaged and I got the typical hard start. I wonder if that may have weakened or even cracked that tooth and it finally broke off four spool-ups later.

Could have been damaged by that first start up. Hope you get it resolved with out too much trouble.

Hi Rob,

which pinion did you use on the 7HV, the 12tooth ?? Compass recommends using at least the 13 tooth because these pinions have a better grip on the maingear than the 12 tooth pinion.

Installed the new main gear and got the 7HV back in the air today. Did a few flights trying to get the feel for this heli. Definately has a lot of power (much more than my old raptors), and I feel like I'm having to learn good collective management all over again. The heli just feels different in the air, not in a bad way. It just flys different than what I am used to. Never had such crazy power before!

Tick-tocs are fast and crisp, flips/rolls fairly axial. Had to get my collective back on track to make those flips nice and axial. Like I said, it's taken me a few flights to get the feel for this electric/flybarless stuff.

Piro-flips felt very weird at first. You know when they don't transition right and look goofy the way they did when you were learing how to do them? At first I thought, maybe some tweaking in the vbar? Wrong. I just have to get used to this heli. I had to do several piroflips to get them to look as nice as they looked on my old raptors. I guess it's just a matter of getting used to the way this whole new machine and flight system feels in the air.

It's been a big learning curve, the past few weeks going from FB-Nitro 90, to FBL-electric 90. Overall though, I am impressed with this heli and will probably be more so as I get aquainted with it.

Now it flys great.
Last week I said my piroflips looked weird. Figured out why. V-bar apparently has 50% expo on the tail by default. I don't fly with any expo, so I removed it in the system. Next I discovered that if your sensor is not centered on the heli, that you must do a trim flight to teach the vbar where "center" is. I did this, and now the 7HV flys really well. Still trying to manage this collective. This heli is way more powerful that my old nitros. Liking this one more and more each weekend.

the sensor does "NOT" need to be in the center of the heli, in fact it only needs to be "square". Also to note the trim flight is not necessary if you can piro without head disc variations, and if you used a swash tool and or the geometry was all done proper there is really no need for Autotrim flight. Most often people can see disc oscillation and in many cases their swash was not set level middle, top and bottom as per the setup wizzard. Also as in all large elctrics your COG must be accurate and on as can do strange things....Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...
