And some of the debt was... unpaid medical bills!

Delicious irony.

After reading the story, it looks like a non issue with this one and an act of desperation if used to defend ObummerCare.

Liberty once lost, is lost forever.

read the story Carey. As usual, very misleading headlines.
Her bill was 4,500 bucks. If she couldn't afford to pay that, how was she going to pay upwards of a grand per month for insurance for her and her hubby???
On top of that, her health bills were less than 10% of her debt she's attempting to write off. Those were thrown on the heap for good measure, as she stated in the story.

Of course I read the story.
Brown's situation, they say, is a perfect example of exactly that kind of "uncompensated care that will ultimately be paid by others."

"This is so ironic," Jane Perkins, a health law expert in North Carolina, said of Brown's situation. "It just shows that all Americans inevitably have a need for healthcare. Somebody has paid for her healthcare costs. And she is now among the 62% whose personal bankruptcy was attributable in part to medical bills."
The cost of health care is not the issue in this story, nor is the ratio of the medical bills to her overall debt.

Guess who pays when folks stiff the system with medical bills they can't pay?

I will say that healthcare does cost too much, and has too many gaps that are leaving good, full time working americans stuck in the corner.

I have been working since I was 13, paying into the system since about 1985. I have paid over 20k in oral surgery bills last year due to a bone problem in my upper jaw. 20k cash, another 10k this year. Medical won't cover it, dental won't cover it. That leaves my savings to pay for my healthcare.

When step 1 is 'profit' and step 2 is provide care, well, you may run into these kinds of problems.

I'm ok I guess, I make a 6 figure living, no kids. I won't get my floors done this year, take a cheaper vacation. What about the folks making 50k a year with a couple kids?

That's who I worry about. They go bankrupt, the bills are paid by everyone else, one way or the other.

I don't see how this is any different than an Illegal Alien (not using un-documented, thats a BS term) pulling the same crap at any hospital.

yeah, I get your point. And yes, it is a problem. I just think the market could take care of some of these problems by taking one simple step: remove the state barriers and open up the industry nationwide. Guaranteed, insurance prices will plummet.
Throw in a little tort reform as well and we're there.
Some people won't self insure because that's just who they are. But there's a lot of people like me out there that just need something we can afford. I'm self employed and my business has been almost non-existent for 5 years (thank god it's good RIGHT NOW), so I've been without ins. and I'm pushing 50 and can guarantee you, I'm gonna have issues the first time I go in for a physical.
So yeah, I have some insight on the matter.
PS - sorry about your floors...

Have you tried writing Obama about your floor problem? I'm sure that he can do something about the evil floor company’s despicable attempt to make a profit off of your unfortunate floor problem!
I'd hate to see you go bankrupt just because the government wouldn't pay for your new floors!

Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about!

I'm glad we can all agree that the current system has huge holes, and we all need healthcare at some point.

I would like to see some budget changes so that we take some more money and use it towards taking care of the good americans that have been out there working the vast majority of their lives, keeping up their part of the deal.

Glad to hear things are going good FHB, would hate to hear otherwise, you sound like the kinda guy I would like to see some safety net under that doesn't involve liquidating all well earned $$ before it kicks in.

You earned your $$, paid a lot in $Tax$ (like all us stiffs) and should get better than what is available.

My floors are literally civil war old, they are past their prime anyway. But hey they got character, and I'm not movin.

easy peezy. Break out the belt sander and respirator!!!
My brother tore up the carpet at the 100 yr. old house he bought from the family estate and found old school pegged hardwood that we never knew was there. Totally redid it (well, my mom and sister did, he watched...LOL). Not that bad of a job really. Just messy.
