Hi,

I am using an Overlander RC-6S to charge my 6S 5000mAh packs. In the charger settings I am selecting anything between 3-4 amps for the charge rate but the charger is never going past 2-2.3A

It's the same on the fast charge program and the balance program. At this rate, the packs are taking 2-2.5 hours to fully charge to 25.2V.

Is this correct behaviour from the charger? I thought the whole point was to be able to select the charging current myself but no matter what I set, it always charges at about 2.2A

I'm reletively novice with electric helis and I'm really hoping some one can shed some light on this for me!

Thanks and best wishes,

Luke

Hey Luke,

I think you are maxing out your charger. If your charger is only putting out 2.2 amps with a 6S (25v) battery, then your charger is limited to about 50 watts. To charge you packs at 1C, or 5A, you will need at least a 125 watt charger. 5 amps (your charge rate) x 25 volts (6S battery) = 125 watts needed.

At the rate you're charging, 2-2.5 hrs sounds about right. When I charge my 5000mah packs at 1C, or 5A, it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to fully charge.

Hi Robv,

Thanks for your reply. I have just noticed that the charger I am using is specified to a max output of 50W, so I guess you're right and that I need to get a more serious charger!

Thanks very much for your help

Luke

Luke,

Before you go off and spend more money on chargers, take a look at your options. You can never go wrong with have a charging system that provides more than you need. You never know, you might need it in the future. Take a look...

You can get a power supply setup similar to these for less than $50. Then the charger you choose is up to you. This should support most of the DC chargers on the market.

FYI, having a high power charging station (1000w plus), makes it possible to charge 8-10 5000mah packs in the same time it currently takes you to charge one of your 5000mah packs.

Read into parallel charging.

Definitely check out ProgressiveRC as well.. Dave can help answer your questions... I am using 6s 3800mah packs in parallel for 12S set up so I like to charge all 6 of my packs at once. I use the iCharger 306B and it can crank up to 30amp charge rates. Basically charge all 6 packs in 40 minutes roughly.

ya you don't have to spend a lot of money if you can put together a couple of server power supplys, i got two out of a old server for nada and made up this for just the cost of the charger alone and it's good up to a 1000 watts....
