On Discovery HD right now. Dude is building a $450,000 bunker for an ex cop/military tactic specialist.

First time I've heard of this show, actually kinda interesting. Didn't know there was such a market for these, but this company is making and has made a ton of them.

Completely self contained units including full kitchen, bathroom, sleeping quarters, storage, septic, filtered air for radioactive fallout, and filtered water. Some are made to survive for up to and over a year in the bunker.

Discuss.

exactly how much good to people expect these to do? Unless you are able to spend enormous portions of your time at home, it's even odds you'll be out and about when the warning of a nuclear attack comes, and if it comes at all you'd have, at best, ten minutes notice. Even if, somehow, you knew the missile was coming your way the moment it cleared the silo, you'd only have 30 minutes to get inside your shelter.

I like this thread, good call. (oh my...)
When I was a kid, growing up within 20 miles of
Strategic Air Command, in the fifties, my dad and I had
conversations about the impending nuclear holocast. Now, at
that time the russkies had lousey aim and single ICBM's!
The consideration was if the 'war' started (Mutual Assured
Destruction) MAD having failed, and a preemptive strike was
indeed a present reality, we would simple go outside and
watch the nuclear 'clouds'!!!

Would you really want to SURVIVE such a horrendous thing?

Life would be over forever the way we once knew it!

No cars, no roads, no food, you'd be STUCK in the bunker
hording your food from those 'survivors' without a bunker
who are 'coming over' for their evening dinner!

While you protected your wife and family, there would be
a whole bunch of dead bodies above your bunker on the dirt,
quite possibly near the intake air tube! yummy.

No Power, no radio, dark at night and your loved ones would
get the chance to experience the stone age - again!

Nah, keep your bunker. I still live in Omaha, where the
MIRV's (Multiple Reentry tipped ICBM's) could miss SAC
*Now Stratcom - and hey a 30 megaton heavy water hydrogen
'bomb' anywhere near us would assure complete devastation!

No thanks.

Keep this in mind: In the 30 minute notification WINDOW,
you and your beloved have a nice opportunity, the Last
opportunity, to receive Jesus Christ as your Savior!
So, if you're building a bunker, please remember to
take a Bible with you! The GIFT of God is to escape death!

I am going outside to enjoy the last SHOW!!!!

Peace to you all, and may peace reign in the whole world.

I love gravity, it always keeps my feet planted when I fly!

The classic poster from the 60s:

In the event of a nuclear attack, place head between knees and kiss your *ss good-bye.

Ask your doctor if your heart is healthy enough for Radio Control Helicoptering.

I'm with you helicopter and rcjon, I don't want to survive such an attack. Life would never be the same. I'd rather go "home."

While it is a noble deed to protect your family, but why would you want that life for them? However long it lasts, you're going to be stuck in that bunker for the duration and when it does come time to come out, there will be devestation. No thanks.
