Ok now that I got the helicopter flying, repaired the minor tip over on landing on the 5th flight, I wanted to open a discussion on how everyone is fine tuning their NEX E8 machines.

I am going to attempt to turn my E8 into both an F3C machine and 3D with two different set ups (bank switching) in VBar 5.2. I would like everyone to post their set up, weight with batteries and then your parameters inside your FBL unit (gain, head speed in flight, etc.) so we can get some good feedback for what is working.

I.E.
Basic Set Up

Motor: Align 700mx 510kv
ESC: Jive 80HV w/heatsink
Batteries: 12S 25C Gens Ace 3800mah (2 x 6S in parallel)
Cyclic Servos: Futaba BLS 451's
Tail Servo: Futaba BLS 251
Flybarless Unit: Mikado VBar 5.2v pro full size
Receiver/TX: Futaba R6208SB receiver with Futaba 8FGHS transmitter

Advanced Parameters

eCCPM Set Up
140° ccpm build

Servo horns
11mm out on each cyclic servo horn, tail servo horn as recommended in manual

Throttle Curves
Normal Mode: (0,35,55,55,55) *will include head speed soon
Throttle Hold: (0)
Idle Up 1: (65,65,65,65,65)
Idle Up 2: (65,65,65,65,65)

Pitch Curves
Normal Mode: (-50,-25,0,50,100), (-6.5°,0°,13°)
Throttle Hold: (-50,-25,0,50,100), (-6.5°,0°,13°)
Idle Up 1: (-100,-50,0,50,100),(-13°,0°,13°)
Idle Up 2: (-100,-50,0,50,100),(-13°,0°,13°)

Head Speeds
Normal Mode:
Throttle Hold:
Idle Up 1:
Idle Up 2:

Flybarless Unit Mixing/Adjustments
Gyro Gain:
Cyclic Gain:
Main head Gain:
Pirouette Rate:
etc. (I will add more to this section tomorrow)
Ideally I will include jpeg pictures right from the VBar unit for
ease of reading to see what parameters I am using....

So the basic idea will be to keep the format from above and just input your parameters.. then we can take adjust what settings we like from there and compare our findings .

I've only got 8 flights through my helicopter now so I know for a fact that the settings I have now will change over time with flying. I haven't started trying the F3C set up yet, and I will wait until my tach comes so I can get accurate head speeds for all the different modes.

The flybarless set ups should be interesting... the VBar has a lot of adaptability within the unit with things like paddle simulation that can really tweak the feel of the helicopter. It is these things I really want to explore as we dial in this helicopter.

A couple of points right off the bat I notice flying my helicopter is the E8 is really sensitive around 0 stick, it either slightly climbs or drops but is very sensitive around neutral. This makes landing a bit sketchy for me coming from a fly-bar background.

I will try and get an all up weight with battery and canopy on this week. I will also take a dry weight without battery pack.

Took a couple flights late this afternoon as the weather has been amazing the past two days...

Here is my current VBar settings...

VBar Main Screen

I need to play around with the tail gyro gain as I noticed flying today I had a slight wag while I was hovering. I think I am going to drop the gain by about 5 points and see if that stops the tail wag completely.

VBar Collective Travel

I had over 15 degrees of travel easily both ways so I had to drop this down to 80 then go into my transmitter and reduce the pitch endpoints to around 90,90 for both + and - pitch. This combined with the vbar adjustments left me with 13 degrees of pitch both ways.

VBar Cyclic Throw

Cyclic was standard, set to 8 degrees using the VBar method to adjust the cyclic as I am becoming less and less fond of using a pitch gauge for accuracy

VBar Tail Servo Adjustment

I shortened up my tail servo link a lot trying to get the tail slider perfectly perpendicular to the shaft but it's a little too short now, I am going to take out a couple turns on the link and readjust the settings to get them closer to the 95-100 range in the VBar. No sub trim used in any of the cyclic or tail servos.

Looking good ..

I got 15 flights now on my E8 and I programmed in bank switching so I have a F3C, Normal, and 3D flying mode on my 3 position switch. Unfortunately the forecast for the week is rain everyday so not sure when I will get to go out again and fly.

I readjusted all my settings in the VBar and I will post them up when I get each bank switch setting tuned to my liking's.

Also finally got a proper swash leveling tool from True Blood and my swash was off just a hair, should fly even better now with a perfectly leveled swash.

Got 3 more flights in today between all the rain. I tried out the bank switching with a F3C style, Normal, super aggressive 3D program in the VBar.

F3C settings Bank Switch 0

Main Rotor

Style: 100
Agility: 60
Gyro Gain: 80

Tail Rotor

Yaw Rate: 60
Gyro Gain: 80

Normal settings Bank Switch 1

Main Rotor

Style: 80
Agility: 90
Gyro Gain: 80

Tail Rotor

Yaw Rate: 90
Gyro Gain: 80

Aggressive 3D settings Bank Switch 2

Main Rotor

Style: 40
Agility: 110
Gyro Gain: 80

Tail Rotor

Yaw Rate: 110
Gyro Gain: 80

After getting a little bit of time trying out the different modes, I felt the aggressive 3D was a bit touchy and needs to be tamed down, the F3C mode wasn't bad at all and not as "slow" or sluggish as I thought it would be. Normal still feels the best and allows you to do 3D just fine and has a smoother feel to it. I am going to try readjusting and I think switch over to just two modes... a F3C type setting for hovering/aerobatics, and a 3D mode. So lose one of the bankswitches

18 flights now logged on the machine, going to regrease the thrust bearings as I had some tail wag today, ever so slight but noticeable and when I hit full pitch the tail would kick out a little. Will try adjusting the gain, but going to regrease first and see if that helps.

On your aggressive setting move style to the middle range, I don't like the aggressive style so keep it same in all banks, seems to wobble through piro transitions, didn't read up on tx but expo at 40 percent for cyclic in tx, zeroed out in software, tail, nothing in tx but default 50 in software works well, agility at around 105.

Common sense may not be common after all

I will try that out Stolla, I just had to experiment with all the settings, and see what I liked
