What disgusting high latency feels like
What disgusting high latency feels like, and why I think speed is important

I think I've found the reason why it's important to have a low-latency rf link. The reason is less about "feel" than we thought it was the last few years.

It's been a while since I've picked up a slow Futaba 9C, and the transition from that old equipment to the speedy stuff I have today (Futaba 8FG) has been a slow one. The transition took 4 or 5 years or so. Change was gradual but has always been a discernible improvement.

Now that we're all spoiled with this fast stuff, it's difficult to go back and readjust to the old slow stuff.

Today, I connected my 8FG to RealFlight 6. I experienced what EXTREMELY high latencies felt like. The controls felt mushy to say the least. But the problem with the high latency went far beyond just a mushy feeling.
I found myself overcontrolling the helicopter while anticipating it to react in certain ways, and in the process, bogging the snot out of the engine. The helicopter was doing what I was asking it to do, just not as crisply as we've gotten used to with today's tech.

It made me appreciate so much more the equipment we have available to us today. Like I said, it goes beyond just "feel." Having a fast rf link really does help get the most out of what our models are capable of.

Don't just take my word for it, try it for yourself. It will really make you appreciate what we have available to us.

+1

Same here. I don't like flying/testing other people's models with ancient equipment.

I cant fly the sim (rf 4?) anymore either. The timing and response is so screwed up its not useful for the moves im working on these days.I got a fever! The only prescription is MORE 6HV

Couldn't agree more
First, I'm no 3D guy. Last year I moved from a 9C to an 8FG and still found the difference to be substantial. With the 9C I had 120 eccpm interaction issues (specifically a pitch servo that would always lag) and I could never dial out the resulting collective/roll interaction. The overall delay could easily be seen on the bench, as could the interaction. I used that radio for 5+ years.

Switched to 8FG last year, no more delay/interaction problems. Like night and day. It took me a little while to adjust to the faster response and my new tendency to over-control.

I still keep the 9C around for buddy boxing.
