Lathe HELP???
I need to find me a cheap phase converter for a good size Lathe i got. Does any one know where i can get a good deal on one? It has a 20 HP 3 Phase motor on it and i want it to run off of 200 amp home service? I got it in a trade with a guy and i want to hook it up in my back yard shop to play with. I program CNC Mills all day every day but i don't know much about manual Lathes, and i want to learn. If some one could give me a link to one i would thank you greatly?

Thanks to all with help.

Check Enco, their about as cheap as your going to find. You might want to consider replacing the motor with a single phase motor that is lower HP. Unless you plan on heavy cuts you probably dont need 20 HP.

After reading the first sentence of your post, I immediately thought of suggesting a VFD instead of a phase converter. But seeing that it's a 20HP motor, it might be cheaper to go with a phase converter. A 20HP VFD will be pretty pricy. Unfortunately, I know very little about the phase converters, so I can't help you on those.

What size lathe is it that has a 20HP motor? I've only worked with small machines.

Thanks for the replys. I think from end to end it must be about 10 - 12 ft long, but i only has about a 10 inch chuck. It has a three jaw chuck on it and i have a four jaw 12 inch chuck also. It also has a steady rest with it. I think it will turn something around 4ft,i will have to pull a tape on it. Please keep the info coming.

Thanks

7 !/2 HP would be big enough for a lathe that size that is just used for home use. You will probably need to buy a new magnetic switch but it might be less than buying a phase converter. Also , check the voltage of the motor thats in it, you may not be able to use a phase converter.

I would check with the electric motor repair shops in your area. If you buy a motor online shipping can be pricy.

You must have one heckva shop area, that is a big lathe for home shop use. You may need to change your name from smallplanes to bigplanes.

Here's link that might help with some information that you're looking for. You can also make your own like I did, but mine is only 5hp rotary phase converter. Google plans for rotary phase converter, there's quite a few out there and they're cheap. For a 20hp you're probably going to need a 40hp phase converter. You should just look into changing your motor with a lower hp rating it would be much cheaper and save yourself some headache.

Buy a single phase motor, and a smaller one to boot.I would rather be in a boat, with a drink on the rocks, then in the drink, with a boat on the rocks!

You gotta be resourceful.
I was whammied when my buddy needed his Phase-O-Matic back.
I found a brand new 10hp 3 phase motor on CL for 150.00 and ordered a capacitor/starter panel here: http://www.wnysupply.com/index.cfm/...parentcat/26796

Total cost-450.00

Unless you are turning some heavy material you dont need 20hp.

With a smaller motor just remember that you will need to match the case and shaft size and try to get the RPM close to what you have. On the name plate of the motor you should be able to find this information. I think you would be supprised how cheap you can find a motor for. (single phase) I would look for a 7.5 hp motor. Hope you have a means of getting the 20hp motor of it is monted in a high spot.

Check with Skycraft here in Orlando Florida. They are a surplus store that is loaded with all kinds of used stuff. Might be surprised what you will find at a really good price.Dx7 With Ion Power Supply. Why use anything else.
