cracked muffler on vario acrobatic
Has anyone had trouble with their mufflers cracking around the frame mounts. I have an Acrobatic with less than 2 gallons burned through it.This is a brand new heli. It has the front mount muffler and it has a split between the 2 frame mounting plates. You would think a $260 muffler would last longer than this...............sucks

Are you sure you don't have a buzz vibration in the mechanics ? You can easily fix it or if you'd like I 'll fix it for you. The silver solder you use is not cheap but it can be fixed.I use the same flux coated rod that Krumscheid uses when they build the muffs.. Wayne

Thanks Wayne for the offer. I have already repaired it. I had the silver solder and torch equipment in my shop.
This heli is butter smooth,no vibes that I can see. I was really surprised to see it crack, which was why I inquired as to whether anyone else was having problems.
The crack started at the corner of the lower bracket, and ran half way round the front dome. As you know, this is the only attachment point on the muffler, with the remainder sticking out in thin air.
I wonder if adding a bracket to the front would help?

I have never heard of these muffs cracking, mine didn't so I wouldn't worry with it. It may have been under stress when it was fabricated.

Mine Cracked too and my heli is super smooth also. I Silver Soldered mine then painted it with Grey High Temp Header Paint. I haven't tried yet.

I did have one of the big cylindrical mufflers,in fact two of them to completely disentigrate the baffles and tube welding inside these mufflers. When I contacted Vario in Germany about it and sent pics they blew it off as my heli must be vibrating ! That big 1/4 scale Bell 47 ran as smooth as glass ,but then they must know best, right ? ! Of course no offer to replace at any price was ever offered either. Oh well, not mad about it,just dissapointed that they just blew off the problem. WP

Soft coupling!
You need a softer coupling like silicone, Aerotrend is out of business but they used to make really nice silicon tubing.

That won't solve this problem. I have never used the silicon connectors that didn't split in no time. The heating from silver soldering and welding causes the metal to be stressed and without stress relieving in a high temp oven it just will happen once in a while. The problem with my big cylinder type mufflers was that the internal tubes were just "tacked" in place by tacks no larger than 3/16" spots.Just poor design.
