What a weird thing to happen. Luckily no one was seriously hurt. But they are done for the night I bet.

Be interesting to see if the track will be useable for the remainder.

This seems to have been a 'cursed' 500 or even speedweek period.

Not only did they not think they would fight that, but they sure did not respond well to it. Glad it was not a driver in a car on fire, he would have roasted.

Looked like he lost a driveshaft or something like that right before he hit it...

I have 2 questions.

1. Why don't they have rain tires in nascar?
2. Did anyone else notice when they were cleaning the 200 gallons of
jet fuel up it basically looked like they rinsed it right down into
the infield grass?

The DO race in the rain. Just not on oval tracks.
Besides, when was the last time a Le Mans race has been delayed for 200 gallons of burning jet fuel?

That said, Daytona and Talladega races are lame and need to be eliminated from NASCAR. Restrictor plate racing is a crap shoot at best and it's impossible to predict a winner. It's a game of luck.

Actually they first put down a s*%t load of speedy dry (like cat litter) and that adsorbed about 95% of the liquid.

Next thing they did was wet the surface with water and then put laundry detergent on it to clean the oil/fuel off the surface of the track.

Either way, it was the most bizarre 500 so far!
If it ain't broke, go fly some more!

Get rain tires and windshield wipers and stop screwing with the race schedules.Everybody else that plays with their steering wheels runs in the rain.I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

Didn't I just get done saying this?
They DO race in the rain but NOT on ovals just like INDY cars race in the rain but NOT on ovals.

well oval racing makes it that much easier.Besides if they get in trouble they're letting go of the steering wheel anyway. So whats the difference?I don't think the rain knows which way the car is turning and a wet surface is a wet surface is it not?I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

Wrong. Because they're built for very high speeds, an oval track makes it HARDER to race in the rain, not easier. This is why they don't do it.
The tires simply wouldn't be able to withstand the forces needed to keep the car on the track. even rain tires will still lose traction or rip themselves apart. Whichever happens first.
Besides, who wants to watch a car go around in a circle for 400-500 miles at 80mph?
They race on road courses because road course speeds are usually under a 100mph anyway, and with cornering speeds under 40.

By the way, when was the last time you saw an NHRA event held in the rain?

NHRA is a different matter.F1 is slower in the rain also but they do it.F1 is built for higher speeds too.I really don't care one way or the other but racing in the rain would mix it up and would add an element of surprise so to speak that is out of every ones control.Besides if they keep adding races they won't have a choice without extending the season.Trust me for the guys that travel to the race tracks no matter how much they "love " it it gets old.I love the smell of nitro in the morning..

you're really comparing apples to oranges.
F1 cars don't run in a 43 car field.
F1 cars don't corner at 200mph+ (although they would if they were on an oval)
It's also worth mentioning that they weigh roughly one-third of what a NASCAR cup car weighs.
F1 cars do not race on ovals. If they did, you can bet that they, like INDY cars, will NOT race on a wet oval.
