There is a profound misconception that fhss is inherently inferior to FASST, which is completely false.

There are many ways to implement fhss, some are great, some are not great.

Fhss has been proven to allow the fastest, most robust, and longest range application of 2.4 technology. There are reasons other brands have been successful with fhss and Futaba is now using fhss in more of their radios. Simply put, fhss works, is safe if done properly, and keeps the prices affordable and competitive.

FASSt is still a premium priced implementation of 2.4 that is available to Futaba users, and rightfully so. It works and works well. But, this does not mean that their fhss is parkfly technology.

Look at how many other products have rolled off of the production lines that offer superior performance at a fraction of the cost of previous offerings.

The cgy-750 is cheaper than my first gy-601. Which would we rather use?

Lower pricing does not equate to lower quality or inferior performance, necessarily.

Unless I've missed something, the GY-601 is no longer produced. If that is the case I don't think the CGY-750/GY-601 is a valid comparison to FHSS/FASST. One didn't replace the other as a "newer" technology. Radios are being sold today using both technologies.

What makes FASST a "premium priced implementation of 2.4"? There must be something that makes it better than FHSS to command a "premium price". If FASST is indeed a premium implementation, logically, FHSS is inferior in some way. That's not to say it doesn't work and work very well.

Either there is something that makes FASST a superior product or it's simply marketing hype.

I wonder if there will be a time that fasst is phased out just like the 601 gyro was, which would make my comparison 100% valid.

It was originally assumed that Futabas fhss offering was meager parkfly protocol, but this new radio proves otherwise.

As far as marketing, every manufacturer must orchestrate a way to transition their newest wares. Sometimes they start at the top of the product line, other times they work up from the bottom. Consumers get frustrated when the shift is enforced across the entire product spectrum at once making their current mmerchandise immediately obsolete. This often sends consumers ranting to a competing brand to display their disatisfaction with being forced into an upgrade, especially if their existing products still work well.

Alternately, Futaba may simply offer a second, more affordable option that works well to gain more market share at the entry and sport levels of the consumer while allowing deeper pockets to continue to enjoy FASST.

Does their new flagship 18 ch operate both protocols to allow choice? Does that make the 18 a junk parkfly radio? Cheaper rx's are probably welcomed for additional models.

Does this open doors for smooth transition in Futabas future?

Marketing it is, but I also call it life. We exist in a living and breathing market that has no plans to expire any time soon.

Just to clarify, I stated this post with " I wonder."

I think FASSTest is the top of the line protocol. It just came out with the 18MZ and hasn't trickeled down yet. It's not called FHSSest.

When I think of this FHSS/S-FHSS VS FASST/FASSTest I think of it as comparing a Toyota to a Lexus.
The Toyota will do the job just as well as the Lexus just without the air-conditioned glove box.
I believe that most of the people bought the 18 MZ for the bragging rights of owning one and not because they had a genuine need for an 18 channel radio.
I also believe that the FASST/FASSTest protocol will be around as long as it takes Futaba to recoup the design and engineering cost it took to develop their proprietary chip to process their FASST protocol.

I got mine in the mail on Friday! I set up three of my helicopters on it and all I can say is WOW!!! This is a great radio! Super easy to program, feels great in my hands, has some great features and a great price. If any of you are on the fence about buying one of these radios...make the jump! you will not be sorry!

The buzzer is just as loud as the buzzer on my DX6i. After I got this radio I had no use for my 8FGHS or my 7C so I sold them. I kept the DX6i for all of the bind and fly stuff...damn you Spektrum...
The cool thing about the buzzer on the 8J is you can change the tone of it in the menu. So if you have a problem hearing high tones you can change it to one you can hear.
