mhills - yeah, I have no idea what the HK401B runs at, but I'm guessing it won't be faster than an Align DS520.

While setting it up tonight, I stripped another cyclic servo gear, so... for now, I'm in wait mode, again. Ticked me off so much, I went flying. I've only got my 450SE and my new 550. Finally got a charger though and took 5 battery packs to the field tonight.

Oppie... Wow! I've got the 550 dialed in really well. Loops, flips, piros, funnels, inverted flight/hover - did it all tonight (can't do piro flips yet - working on it).

Only thing I did was adjust the links a little so I'd have more negative - +/-14 and I added a little bit of gain to both the Ail and Elev, but dialed back the Ail as it was fluttering a little while inverted. But it flies like a dream now.

I will say that I totally understand the advantage of having 3 flight modes, as I only have 2 and finding the sweet spot for switching between hover and idle up on the DX6i with a bigger heli is trickier. If there's a magic trick to finding the perfect curves, I'd sure like to know it.

Otherwise, I can't wait to go flying again!!!

MasterBlate I'm so impressed that you got your 550 programed and dialed in wow. I'm in Montana thrashing some Trout around and I was worried you were going to have to wait until I got back to get it programed. One question, are you using gov mode in the Castle ESC? Just wondering. Sounds like you have it tuned in and are enjoying flying it.I just finished reading "the last chapter of whats the use/ or how to fly Helicopters"

Hey MasterBlader, I don't know if there's a "magic" solution to the curves settings, per se, but basically you just want to make sure you don't have a big difference in the pitch curve between idle 1 and idle 2 at, or about, center stick. That way when you switch, the heli won't suddenly lurch up or down.

Even though I have idle 1 set up, I almost never used it and always started, flew, and shut down in idle 2. (I started doing this after the 2nd time I forgot to switch from idle 1 to idle 2 and went inverted.) Just make sure you're using your soft start feature in your ESC, regardless.

Even on my new DX8, I've only configured idle 1 and idle 2. (Idle 3 is configured, but it's the same as idle 2.)

My personal recommendations for curve settings are actually fairly universal and this is roughly what I'm using now.

For idle 1:

Throttle - 0,35,50,75,100 (position 5 could be less than 100 if you want.)
Pitch - 35,45,50,75,100

For idle 2:

Throttle - 85,85,85,85,85 (or whatever number gives your preferred headspeed.)
Pitch - 0,25,50,75,100

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but generally speaking, it's best to make changes to idle modes when you're at center stick, which is why position 3 on the pitch curve in both modes are the same. Of course, with the curves I outlined here, you could be anywhere above center and still flip/flop between the two modes if the heli is right side up.

Again, this is just my 2 cents, so I'm sure someone else will have a different recommendation. Some people like to have thier throttle curves for idle 2 something more like 100,90,85,90,100, for example.

I have mine adjusted very similar to yours. Just my idle up is higher - 100 95 90 95 100.

I think I might have had my rates switching on flight modes, which might explain why idle up was substantially lower - the heli would drop a lot when I switch from hover to idle up.

A couple more flights and I'll get it. Not having it just perfect gives me that extra motivation to get out to the field.

I'll be working at Children's International for the next three weeks - which is right down the street from Minor Park. If I could just figure out how to charge my batteries at work, that'll be awesome! \=]

You talking about the dual rates? (D/R) Yeah, I don't use D/R's at all. Setups can be confusing enough without those, so I don't worry about them!

Master blader I keep it simple and run the same pitch curve on both idle up's 0 pitch at center stick and what ever you want in pitch positive
and negitive say + 13 degrees and - 13 degrees.
streight curve from there in between.
then all you have to do is set throtle curves on both flight modes to the different rpm's you want.
that way the only adjustments you need to make is to throtle curves. makes it real easy.
if you want it easier then use a govenor and you dont have to set any thing.

79 degrees, zero wind - visited Minor Park today at lunch. Wow! What a great moment in the day for flying. I'm exactly 3 minutes drive from the field - grabbed lunch and tested the changes to my throttle curve to see if I've finally got an exact match between flight modes.

Its perfect now - can't tell that I'm switching. Thanks for the help, guys!

Flew two battery packs - now I have them re-charging inside of my desk drawer at work. The office is quiet and my darn charger is super loud!

Can't wait until 5pm - will be back at the park!

I get off work at 11:30am today, so I'll be there!

Of course, the drive takes a bit, so I won't actually be at the field until 11:32am...

Colonial Presbyterian Church flight Demo
The flight demonstration put on by the Eagles and KC Heli took place yesterday afternoon at the Colonial Presbyterian Church in Olathe and it worked out great! There were over 400 adults and children at the event and we got quite a bit of attention with our helicopters!

Mike Sutherlin from KC Heli set up a buddy box system with his new Blade 130X and several kids were able to try their hand and hovering, which they enjoyed quite a bit.

I only took a handful of photos, but here they are.

(High res here.)

Thanks again to everyone who participated!

I'm converting my 500 clone to flybarless. While building it as a flybar heli, I had purchased these really inexpensive servos for the CCPM: http://www.altitudehobbies.com/gote...085mg-hs-5245mg

Two of them went bad on me while setting things up. To be fair, I did have a slight mishap that broke my blades, blade grip, etc. while attempting to setup the tail. So, I can't blame that entirely on the servos. While they're not in servodatabase.com, there's a little hype around them as being fast and powerful, even better than the Futaba S9257. Bottom line, however, they operate around 70Hz and that's far from fast enough to work with a 3-axis gyro for flybarless (thank you, Micah, for looking up that info!)

I have now 3 HS-5245MG servos. There are "some" minimal bad posts about these, but mostly it looks like the servos burn up when their torque is maxed out a lot. Comparing these to the DS520 or even the DS510M servos which are recommended for Trex 500 CCPM, the Hitec servos - the 5245's have quite a bit more torque. I'm thinking I should be ok to use these. My only concern is their speed which is comparable to the DS510M servos, but maybe just a very slight (.01 seconds) slower.

Does anyone have an opinion about these? Bad experiences?

Thanks!

Those should be great for your cyclic .12 to .14 speed. The beast setup says they are good on cyclic to 200HZ, but not to go over 165HZ for tail and your not using them for that. Not cheap around $45 eachHave fun while it last!

Good PR
Darin,
Great job with the Church Demo. Thanks for doing a great job. Thanks to all who showed up to help with this event. If I could have got back in town sooner I would have made it out.
Do you think Mike would buddy box me on the 130x. I really want one of those little birds. Might have to wait for the V2.

Thanks again! Where are you finding these numbers for the different servos? I've been looking all over trying to find settings for these things and it seems rarely mentioned!

I'm using a DS520 for the tail and I assume I can go as high as 333HZ?

One great source is the beast.com at the bottom has a list of servo and settings. I also goto the manufactures. I usually email someone who is not in the contact list. I found if you send email to contact person most of the time you won't get a response or just the generic THANK YOU FOR YOUR INQUIRE bla bla bla. (:Have fun while it last!

Late day fun at Minor Park
We had a good assortment of guys at the field later in the afternoon today... Chris brought his NOTAR and Medivac scale helicopters and flew the Medivac for us. Wow! The authentic detail is fantastic, both up close and in the air. Great job, Chris! I wish I had brought my camera!! Doh!

Myself, Mike S., Ammon, Sean, and two or three other guys (didn't catch thier names, sorry!) just hangin' out, flying and helping each other with heli setups all the way until sundown. Good times!
