ESC Question...
So, the Trex 550E Pro comes with a CC Talon 90, and I thought I heard someone say that there have been some reported cutoff and/or brownout problems with the Talon 90 on the stock 550E. Anyone know? I don't really have much understanding about ESC's, but would a 120A be better suited for a 550?

Thanks!

Talon 90 should be plenty, I just don't know about CC...I would prefer the Edge 100 if I was going with CC, not sure the Edge 75 would be enough.

Pascal is much more familiar with CC, he can help you better.

Oh wait, my bad... it's not a CC. I thought "CC" was an abreviation for "Castle Creations", but apparently they (Castle) actually have a product line dubbed "CC".

So, it's just the Talon 90... not CC! Thanks, Chet!

The Talon 90 is a Castle Creations Product.

On a TRex 550, I would go for the Edge 100 as a minimum and use a receiver battery (e.g. a Life 2100mAh) instead of the built in BEC.

If you ever intend to beef up the motor (e.g. use a KDE Direct 600XF, I would go for the Edge 130).

I did get ESC cut-offs on my TRex 600 with a CC ICE 100 using the KDE Direct 600XF Motor.

The above is assuming a 6S setup as the TRex 550 is supposed to be.

Yes, I understand the Talon 90 is a Castle product, but it's not a "CC Talon 90" because "CC" actually refers to a specific product line of BEC's from Castle.

Anyway... sooo, Pascal, you said you recommended a receiver battery "instead of the built-in ESC"... did you mean built-in BEC?

Yes he meant BEC in that instance.
CC still stands for Castle Creations, look on this page...they seem to use it kind of willy-nilly on several products.

He probably recommends a RX battey because the CC internal BEC can't be trusted, like in a Kontronik or YGE, ESC. (I hope he doesn't get mad at me for saying that)

Thanks for the info, Chet and Pascal. That's good enough for me for now!

I'll be at the field tomorrow sometime around 1:00pm or so. The weather is supposed to start out clear, but then clouds increase through the afternoon with overcast conditions by early evening. Winds should be decent at 8~16 mph with a high of 66 degrees by 3pm.

I just saw a forecast that said 75 tomorrow.

I've been pretty sick with a cold...if I feel good enough I'll be there around noon.

Well in that case, it will probably end up somewhere in between.

Splinterheart, several of the guys down here have had problems with the Talon90 and had to send them back to Castle Creations for repair. When they were returned it didn't work and they replaced it with the edge 100. Two of them were on a Trex 550. I don't know what you are looking at but I think the Talon 90 is a little weak for a TRex 550. Are you planning to buy a new Heli?

I just finished reading "the last chapter of whats the use/ or how to fly Helicopters"

Where was everyone today? I didn't fly today, but I stopped by because our friend from the middle of Kansas Jim from our fun fly. The guy that had the medical bag (gone now) and the first HC3X texted me about flying. Just as I was about to leave the field he drove up in his Colorado.

He is hoping you feel better Chet!

Have fun while it last!

sean has the 90 talon in his 550 and has not had any trouble. Warren's quit working on first flight he took it to castle and they replaced it and has not had trouble since. they both seam to handle the load ok.

I recommend a receiver battery for the same reason you are putting an optipower backup system on your TDR, Chet ESCs of all brands can fail. Lipos can fail. A receiver battery is not 100% fail proofed (it could fail too), but is a tad safer.

Yes, you're right, Pascal...imagine my embarasement

After seeing Nader lose his 700 because of a bad solder joint on a battery, I decided a backup of some type is worthwhile. A RX pack is also a good choice, just a little more trouble.

To answer Oppie's question, I'm currently researching my financial position and the feasibility of buying a new heli. It's looking good, but not quite ready to pull the trigger. I just wanted to find out about the ESC just to make sure I account for the potential cost.

Thanks again for the feedback, guys!

EDIT: Looks like I won't get to the field until after 3:00pm today. Long story, not worth going into detail here.
