Lower headspeed!

Friends don't encourage friends to fly helis! It can cause part shortages.

You'll have to ask the knowledgable guys. From what I understand a 500 doesn't like to low of a headspeed. so there is a fine line on how low you can go before control in jepordy.

Higher capacity batteries, fewer teeth on pinion. As with most things in life, you have to either find a way to provide more fuel (bigger battery) or reduce the amount of work the motor has to do (fewer teeth on the pinion -- lower head speed). Reduce the overall weight of your heli, maybe longer blades to get a lower disk-loading.

Maybe try to use semi-symmetrical or flat-bottomed airfoil blades.

A lower headspeed will ask you to also work with your pitch curves to achieve the performance you are seeking and balance that with the amount of flight time you get.

Bigger batteries also mean more weight which means the motor has to work harder.

Yes, the 500 will begin to wobble at lower head speeds. Maybe you could do something about this using different dampers. But most helis will begin to wobble as the head speed just gets too low.

It will take some experimentation, but 15 minutes may be a number you just never achieve unless all you do is hover.

Or if your just itching for a project figure out how to put a small gasser in

You don't want to go too high on the capacity but I have heard of people using 3300 packs for sport flying, you could also go fbl, increase the voltage...

Another idea is to make a rig to mount more lipos on the bottom so it doesn't get too noes heavy

But the 500 is an odd size and doesn't handle weight as good as a bigger heli

like 1800 ?
I don't think it will fly that slow.

I get 9 minutes out of 2700mAh, but I don't know what the head speed is.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

I used to fly my Eco8 with 470mm blades at 1400 rpm headspeed. If you could get heavy enough blades and soft enough dampers...

Trex 500 will easily go down to 1800. You'll want Aligns grey dampers not the black ones. Smallest pinion you can find for the 500, I think 11T maybe? 6s 3300mah packs would be needed, the canopy mounts or battery tray would need modding slightly.

hey, heres what I did 2 years ago, flybarless
setup hot on 6S 2700 6 min flight time
dont change nothing
5S 3300 , run it wide open, 10 min flight time
still dont change gearing or nothing,
4S 4400 or 4S 5000,
run wide open still , long long flight time there , close to 15 min

I use to fly my eco 8 for 35 min when lipo first came out

Aha there you go then, 4s 4400-5000 and run it wide open as you say, should give a max of around 1900 rpm and 15 min flight times.

Thanks guys for all the great inputs, so when you say wide open means not to follow the golden rule of the lipo which is 80 % rule ?

and should I stick with the stock 13T pinion ?

so in conclusion :

4S 5000 mah + 13T pinion = 15 minutes flight time !!!

I am thinking to use the LiFePo4 such as this one

http://www.hobby king.com/hobby king/store/__14074__ZIPPY_Flightmax_8400mAh_4S2P_30C_LiFePo4_Pack.html

god I bet this is way too heavy isn't it

No. Wide open mean flat line 100 on throttle, you do have room on 5s to drop. But not much.
4s. Yes , you will need to run it wide open , reason why I say this is because of the align motor, So I know it's safe to run it wide open , it will run cool

Hey , No everything the same, You flying flybarless?
If not, might need to soft dampers, It's easy to get long flights from a heli , just no knows what we went through back in the day with nicd, With the newest machine out there right now, The logo xxtreem , it would be so easy to fly it for 25 min

I am flying flybar, I guess I need to get the soft dampers, but regarding the pitch , is there any recommended numbers ?
