XLV gone electric
My first project with my new machine shop setup has been converting my XLV to electric.

The clutch adapter I made on the lathe.

Clutch on the motor.

Motor mount plate.

Side frames to locate the body mount and stiffening braces.

Flying at the Arizona Electric Festival this weekend.

Thanks guys. It was a fun project and I learned a lot about drawing in CAD, using a CAM program and running the mill.

Here are some specs;

26 pounds ready to fly
Scorpion 4035-400
Castle ICE 80HV
12s 5000mah
Stock XLV gearing
8 minutes flight time
30 Amps in a hover
1400 Watts
23 Amps Average during flight

Awesome e-power conversion and very nice machine work! Just curious, why you put the motor so far forward VS running a shorter belt and moving it back. I'm assuming it was for CG reasons.

All helis and planes have an expiration date stamped on them...you only find it after you crash!!

C.G. was part of the reason.
I was also able to use the stock belt (didn't have to buy any).
Didn't have to butcher the frames.
I was able to keep the clutch.
It can be put back to gas at anytime.

The conversion only cost me $110

$100 for the used motor
$10 for the metal

Everything else I had lying around.

And the lathe and mill? Just kidding, you know you're a real modeler when you spend a ton of money on tooling to make a $10 part. Yes, I'm guilty too! I sure would love a lathe and mill thought! Maybe someday.

Ace, there's nothing like being able to make whatever you want, and this setup gets me one step closer.

OUTSTANDING.
I do a little lathe and mill work myself. I'm not set up quite as nice as you but its sure fun making shavings and busting up tools.

I have an old Smitty 12x20 lathe/drill/mill and a Taig lathe.

Made all sorts of heli, car, boat, plane, gun, and motorcycle etc. parts over the years.

Sure makes it fun.
