Hello all, I am new to octo helis and been flying helis for some time now. I have a Droidworks octo with hoverfly pro board axi heavy lift motors and ztw 70amp speed controllers.
This was the second flight.
After triming the gain, all was well and flying well no probs.
About 6 mins I decided to bring it in and about 3ft of the ground no 5 motor stopped, it wasn't high enough to save but came away unscathed.
Batts still had sufficient power left (37%). The motor in question was also still running on the ground but at a very slow rate. Reset the heli all working again but reluctant to fly, any ideas?
I am suspecting speed controller, going to do some bench testing in the next couple of days see how that goes.
PS I was flying in normal mode.

With just one motor quitting, I would also agree with you that is ESC. Sometimes they smell burnt!

Make sure all esc's are set to slow cut off and have the same cut off voltage. on a multi, I recommend cut off voltages be set to the lowest level and that you manage flight times closely.

Had a close look at the machine and found the signal wire for said controller had been rubing on the edge of a carbon plate and exposed the wire.
The machine had been put together by someone else, never seen that happen so soon on a model esp with low vibs.
Anyway shes getting a full strip down.
Thanks for your help guys will also be reprograming all esc.

All is good. Flying great, thanks for the info.
I have another question, in wind the octo seems a bit pitchy, we are useing xoar 14 7 props. Is the pitch a bit steep?
What is the best prop to use.

After 3 successful flights and a no of bench tests the motor stopped again. Octo suffered small scrape. Has anyone had any experience with ztw speed controllers or any issues with the hoverfly pro board? Will be replacing the controllers and retesting.

Why not test suspected controller on another motor? If its the controller the problem will migrate with it. Otherwise suspect the motor.

I think we may have it. We were running the pro board off the main batt pack which is a 5s setup and that was the way it was setup for us, but looking at the specs it runs between 7.4V – 16.8V which is pretty much 2-3-4s range.
After putting a 3s for the board all is sweet. Just completed 5 bench tests and 5 successful flights without a glitch. Even tested with a 6s batt and no probs. It seems the board was coping with that range.
Keep you posted if it happens again.
