Fury Extreme blade grips conveted to FBL....Your thoughts>>>
So I was looking at converting my Stratus to a FBL setup but didn't really want to drop 3 bills on an MA flybarless head, so I found a guy who had the head MA makes and I had him measure from the center of the main shaft out to where the ball link is on the blade grip arm (to get the proper Delta angle) and I just spaced my ball link out to that same distance has anyone done this before??? and if so did you ever pop a link? I was thinking about putting link locks on the blade grips just to be safe. I've been out of the hobby for quite some time now and have ZERO experience with flybarless setups.

looks like it should work just fine, just make sure your ball standoffs are inline with your main shaftand you should be good to go, what are you using for the swash driver ?    ▲

One of my flyin buddies converted all of his Tempest heads on Xcell gassers to FBL. He has used them with various FBL systems and they all worked well. Username Rbort should have more info on this for you.

back when I flew stratus I did that exact mod, I found it flexed way too much for being good, plus risk of popping a link.

I did this instead...

Thanks guys for the input guys, MrMel I could see where it would want to twist/flex right at where the ball link extends out. But I never new the raptor 90 could fit MA thrust bearings....LOL I guess I'll look for some Tempest blade grips and get the FIA arms. I'm going to check out Rbort and see what he did as well.

I've been using mrmel's recommended Quick UK raptor 60/90 metal grips, together with a 10mm Mikado swashdriver for a few years now, no problem.

Btw I used the double balled links (from the FB bits) at the ends of these grips. This allows you to use the inner one which gets you 90 deg vertical and the outside one provides a bit of anti-popoff insurance, lol!

Quick uk raptor 60/90 grips for ~$87 at; http://www.ronlund.com/rcheli-prod/...QUKR6H-08B.html

Or you can cheap out and use the stock ~$11 Raptor 60 plastic grips;
http://www.heliproz.com/prodinfo.asp?number=134845

In both cases, you just reuse your stock stratus grip bearings.

As an aside, I did shell out ~$300 for the MA 90 head early last year. That was a big waste of time and money. It looked great, but the poorly designed swashdriver, together with so-so head quality was a bit disappointing imho. I ended up selling this (~50% recovered) and went back to my Quick Uk Raptor grips and Mikado Swashdriver.

Cheers,
TomC

Grips
Wow that's what I wanted to hear, that's why I didn't just buy MA's FBL head. Which begs the question why didn't they just design blade grips around the factory Stratus/Extreme head and make a 10mm awash driver? I'm guessing they would havze sold a lot more had they just made grips. I'll let you know how I make out, thanks for the advise.

I took the same approach JR did with the Vibe FBL head.

I just replaced the two hex bolts at the base of the head block with double ball studs, also had to lengthen one end of the mixing arm with a spacer under the double ball stud, and used the required rod lengths to get the geometry correct.

EDIT: Oh yeah.....used a 10mm Mikado swash driver as well.

Still fine tuning but it seemed to work ok on the test flight in the fall. Waiting for warmer weather to test further.

Does not look rigid enough. If the link flexes, it will pop off.Old Guys Rule!
