Hi Guys - I use Futaba 9650 servos for my swash. Running out of the replacement plastic gears and they are expensive too. In the past, I know some use the aftermarket DS9660 metal replacement gears.

Questions:
1. Are these metal aftermarket gears fit perfectly on the futaba 9650 servo.
2. Same teeth count ? ( torq ratio)
3. Are they worked just as good as the Futaba standard plastic gears
4. Once suffered a major crash, servos get destroyed or still good to use ( below is the reason I asked for this particular question)

I tried INO LAB's DS251MG servos on my Rex500 - what happened after couple of crashes, Ino Lab DS251 Metal gears still function but they started devloping weared movements and also seemed lost some tight binding when compared to when they were new. The result is although they still function but no more for heli application.

Just wondering what servos are good for rex500 now a day. I have about 10 Futaba 9650 for my two Trex500 and I like 9650 very much but for $12 a set of replacement gears just too much, have to replace all 3 each crash
Just wondering why Futaba wants $12 for a set of replacement 9650 plastic gears. Also, almost 90% of the time I need only to replace #2 & #3 gears.

1. Yes perfect fit.
2. Close to the same (favors torque)perfect for FBL.
3. Better IMO use a good grease when reassembling the gears in the servos
4. Servos will last hundreds of crashes! just be smart and use plastic servo wheels or arms instead of metal! Arms break every time, servos last for long long time.

5. plastic servo arms will be a tight fit but do fit! just nice and tight.

6. If you can find the Ti gear set for the 9660A its even stronger than the standard metal gear set.

IMO futaba 9650 is one of the top mini servos with the TI gear combo that can be used in a 500 IMO.

Cheers,
Raven

I got mine at HK, I took a look, they don't sell the Ti gears separate anymore? just the complete Ti servo??

http://www.hobby king.com/hobby king/store/__282__189__Servos_and_parts-MKS_Servo.html

The standard metals should do fine. I have not heard of anyone stripping those with plastic horns. I have a friend with the standard gears and he crashes all the time!

I just bought the TI gears because it was available at the time.

You might find more places that sell them if you do a google search for the 9660A+ gear set. The + is the TI coating on the metal gear
1 Titanium Gear + 4 aluminum-alloy Gears
EDIT: I just did the search for you found the Ti set here...

Check the post out over at helifreak Proto forum. One pilot tried DS9660A+ set on a Futaba 9650 without any luck but DS9660 metal set works though.

That's hilarious! Because the DS9660A+ fit just fine in the 9650.

Many others have used this "upgrade" with out issue as well.

I would not give this tip if it did not work for myself and many others! This is not a "new" mod

Sometimes its the user behind the tool that causes problems

when you crash a protos you want titanium gears.
I scrapped a 9650 servo when it hit a fence but the gears survived so I transfered the gears into a new 9650 and have been using for a year now.

short of buying mks servo's it the next best thing

I was about to purchase 9660A+ from Amain Hobbies after my orginal posting here, but, I stopped after I saw the postings at helifreak under the Proto. The guy even showed many Pics ( clear pics) between 9660A+ and 9660 metal gears -- apparently the two are diffrent.

I also received email comfirmation from Thomas of HKS USA that two are diffferent ( 9660A+ and standard 9660 metal gears).

I got 4 sets of DS9660 metal gears about a month ago from RCGroups classified section for $45 shipped from Canada. Iplaced them in my Futaba 9650 servos- they fit perfect - I already had about 10+ flights on it, no problem whatsoever.

The guy over at helifreak Proto section even offered to give away his 9660A+ gears since they don't work on his F9650 servos.

I wish I could get those 9660A+ from him just to see if they work on the F9650 servo.

So, it is very strange - this forum says something and helifreak forum on this particular suject says another and supported by pics.

I JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY SINCE 9660 STANDARD METAL GEARS DO WORK ON MY FUTABA 9650 SERVOS AND WORKING WELL.

Another thing is, if you do crash hard with F9650 servo with metal gears, mostlikely the servo is gone - motor etc. but the gears may survive. On the other hand, it is hard to justify to pay $12 for a set of plastic Futaba 9650 gears.

if you already have them don't worry about it

after what mine went through and the previous owner put them through
at least a dozen crashes worth just make sure you use plastic servo arms and even then expect a link or 5 to break

I'm sold on MKS gears

if im not mistaking the 9660a+ is a slightly diferant gear ratio
making them faster but less torque than the 9660 gear set

Hey CX1 can you post a pic of your Ti servo gears in the futaba servo...apparently pics are the only way to proof it works

I don't know what to say to the OP but, do and believe what you want. Seems even HKS shoots them self in the foot...did they say there different and wont fit??
I did mention this long ago THEY ARE DIFFERANT than the standard metal(different ratio I believe) but DO fit and work fine.

Raven.

Guys - I believe every words you are saying here. Yes, I use only Futaba plastic servo arms, not those rigid plastic/carbon powder arms nor those alum arms. Those are rigid but they are servo destroyers. Provided my skill level not to the par to those who can do crazy 3Ds, I simply enjoy flying heli upside down with mild "3Ds".

Like I said,I am just lucky to get 4 sets of 9660 metal gears for $45 shipped, they work. I guess HKS 9660A+ servos are way to go but I think they are $80 a pup ? meanwhile, I have 9 Futaba 9650s that I purchased form Tower Hobbies over the years, and I like F9650 a lot on my Trex 500. I also have Hitec9245MGs on my other rex500s, I like them too but Futaba9650s seem to be smoother.

I statred with sending email to HKS Taiwan headquarter. After few email exchanges with HKS Taiwan, they forwarded my emails to Thomas of HKS USA. AT first, he simply saying they carry only 9660A+ servos meentioned nothing about 9660 metal gears I requested, and then he said they don't carry 9660 metal gears here is USA due to lack of demand. I asked if I can order DS9660 metal gears set from him, no answer. S I got no where and just about to order some DS9660A+ servos form him due to I was running out of 9650 plastic gears and don't want to pay $12 for Futaba plastic gears that's when I picked up the DS9660 metal gears from RCGroups and happy ever since. I still need another 4 sets gears. You do need to put some high temp grease on each and every gear though.
