14MZ Neck Strap Loop Loose (Design Issue)
Hello All

Well I guess it had to happen to me. I didn't notice that the loop for my strap was loose until today and it was pretty much ready to fall...and it did.

Lucky for me my Tx hit soft Earth and nothing but a switch got damaged.

I had to tear my Tx down quite a bit to get to the screw.

My big issue is the fact that you have to go so deep into the tx to fix this issue. And I know for a fact that I am not the only one that has had this issue with the loop coming loose... This operation is not for the faint of heart. BTW, I did use lock tight...there was none on the screw originally

I've got a genuine 14mz strap I've been using for at least 5 years.
What "loop" are you talking about?

Did the TX mount come loose in one flight? Or did it loosen up over time?

The TX case is plastic. I hope you didn't over-tighten it when you put it back together or you may be complaining about the stress crack. Yes the nut should have had some kind of goo on it originally - probably not loctite.

Seems like not many people have to deal with the 14MZ

I'm assuming this happened over time.

The metal hoop the neck strap clips to is metal! It attaches to the structure with a 2.5mm screw.

The internal structure of the 14mz is metal, the plastic is just a cover...its a pretty complicated structure on the inside but they did a very good job in my opinion...other than access to the strap loop screw...

The hook on my 14mz came loose about 2 seasons ago. I opened the radio (very carefully) and was able to tighten it. Last season it happened again, but it didn't get loose, the plastic around the screw cracked and wound up breaking. I sent it in to Futaba and they had to replace the front cover. They gave the radio a complete make over, new front, back, bottom panels, screen, and pots; total price was about $500.....If it ever happens again, the radio will be sold and the 8fg will be in its place.

14mz neck strap loop repaired
Well, it happened happened to me, neck strap loop broke through the front cover. I sent the transmitter into Hobby Services last Friday, and just received it (less than a week turn around time in my hands with expedited service. They replaced the front cover, badge, loop, and threw in a new battery to boot. $228.09 not including shipping to HS. Hobby Services again has exceeded my expectations.

With a new $90 battery thrown in free of charge I thought the repair was quite cheap.

September 2013. I had it repaired back then and it's been working well since. Be careful though. The mount is more fragile than you might think.

Very weak neck strap loop as I see.

I have a 12Z... Similar neck strap.

If there a way you over tension that loop?

Putting sideways torque on the mount probably a bad idea.

I did some calculations.

It is not posible that neck strap loop cause such a failure.

Even though, forces are high on pivot, everything is on the post.

The only way to destroy the board is that the resulting force is apply on top of frame and not on the post.

Archimedes is always right.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you suggesting the forces on the balancer are insufficient to damage the transmitter? I suppose it is possible the 12Z is constructed differently but with regards to the 14MZ, it is certainly possible to damage the neck strap post with normal use. I don't need a calculator for proof.

Did I misread your comments?

Doing some calculations, I demonstrated to myself that this failure was cause for an external force and not for this gadget.

The lever actions directly on post and not on the PCB board.

The only way to pull out the post from its PCB socket is just for a high external force.
