Danny gave me Jan's entry and I just wrote it down. If is not a stock production TDR it will be Unlimited.Sorry about any mispelling, is a lot of cut, paste and retyping.Still a very impressive lineup. The pros are not eligeable to the pilots drwaing but free to earn the $1000 cash prize.
The cool thing is they are approaching it as a "fun" event. Many non pros are more serious and their entry details (non disclosable) may prove it.With so many pilots and entries, the attemps time will be cut to 3min with ONLY the top 10 going to round two. |

Setup tips for speed flying I have answered several PM's on this subject from guys wanting to run in the Speed Cup. Most of this is applicable to any machine. Hope it helps.https://rc.runryder.com/t704681p1/Danny - DemonAero Support Team |

Hey Guys, This looks like so much fun it's got me thinking about getting a serious speed heli together. I used to drag race helis back in the early 2000s and when I got my first electric helicopter, a Joker back about 2001, it was kicking just about everythings butt. I'm still flying them but haven't had the passion like I used to. Especially when a 12 year kid can embarrass me at flying 3D anymore.I'd like to ask a question or two. How fast can one expect to get a stock 12S 700mm Eheli going these days. And what kind of head speeds are guys doing to acheive these speeds.I've seen Matt Botos fly a 12S heli on a long straight high speed run and I'm figuring he was doing in the 100MPH area as judged by comparing the speed of my EDFs. But this was about 3 years ago and I know you guys are flying insane head speeds these days. I thought 2200 on a 9 pound 700mm drag heli was NUTZ but I'm guessing that's slow by todays standards. Thanks for any repliesQ |

Depends on many factor obviously but you can expect a regular 700 sized heli with single stage gear train and therefore wide frames and canopy to reach into the upper hundreds on a straight line. Double stage helis like the TDR, Diabolo, Voodoo, Banshee with a profiled canopy easily reach 200+ Km/h on standard equipment and head speeds. Specialty helis are setup with higher headspeed (2200 to 2400) and more pitch (15º to 18º) which require a more powerful motor to sustain the headspeed and we are talking around 220/230 on a straight line. Current world record is held by the Banshee with a speed fuselage and insane motor on 16S lipos at 239.69 km/h.For recreation you get off a dive at 240 with a standard heli and can reach into the upper 200s easily with more powerful helis. You also take into account weight, frame strength, gears strength, component's temperature, main and tail blades, CG and FBL unit characteristics and setup.Marcos |

Thanks Marcos, That makes a lot of sense about the narrow frames, compound tranny and fuse for ultimate speed. I've got two old Mincopter Jokers gathering dust that have compound trannys that will accept regular heli motors and they're only about 60mms wide. You've given me some ideas. What is the thoughts on belt drive tails, or is everybody using TTs.How do they measure speed? Radar, GPS or Doppler? The jet guys are using a smartphone app that is pretty accurate I understand. I guess I could get a GPS unit for my EagleTree and get an idea of what my heli will do. Then maybe blow the dust off those old Jokers and put a modern power system and flybarless head on one. They were always very fast with that narrow super light very aerodynamic Minicopter canopy.Q |

Belt or TT doesn't matter. TDR is TT, Diabolo, Voodoo and Banshee belt. For speed I used a radar gun but it's pretty unsafe unless you have a tripod. Otherwise when measuring at an angle you don't get the correct speed, and flying over a friend is very unsafe. Many use these very small GPS units with servo connector to power it from your electronics. you turn it on and it measures highest recorded speed. Pretty limited, but it's a start. |
