Any aircraft mechanics out there...give me some advise please!
Hello all!

I've been looking into a couple schools and programs lately around the Detroit area. I was just wondering a few things first... What do these training programs cost? Also, in the end, what do mechanics make in this field?

A little more personal about me...I have a felony on my record from something I did on a motorcycle when I was 19, will this be an issue for employment down the line or even for the schools?

Any UFO would be great! Thanks all!

A&P schools will accept you with out a background check. They will take your money. The schools are 18 months long and are about 40k. But when you apply to an Aircraft company you must pass a 10 year background check. Average Starting pay with an Airline is about $18:00 Base pay. Then you uasually get $1:00 per hour more with each of your ratings. Airframe $1:00 powerplant $1:00 Eng Run/taxi another dollar ect. You may want to talk to a Lawyer to see if you can gat the Felony removed from your record.

Thank you! I figured the training schools would be around that range in price. I have looked into having that removed in the past and it pretty much comes down to the $ to do so. You would think they make a bit more than that but...it's still pretty good.

Well, this is something I've thought about for a while and I still would like to do a lot more research on the schools and my situation. Thank you for the info.

im an a&p mechanic.
i got my experience from the military.

theres always jobs around but the pay can vary wildly.
it seems the military contract jobs pay the best. dont expect to be rich in this field. oh and expect to spend a small fortune on tools.
jobs tend to be from 19 an hour to 35 an hour.

there seems to be alot of jobs working on helicopters right now.

I read that you're expected to acquire around 1-4,000 dollars worth of tools for this field... :/

You need to fix that record. I doubt big airports where the airlines play will issue you a security ID with a felony in your record.

General aviation jobs probably wouldn't care about the record but they don't pay as well.

Yea, I've thought about that rout but...I gonna be 30 this mth, I have a 3 year old son and I'm gonna be married soon. That would be a great opportunity to serve our country and gain knowledge on a career I'm very interested in. I just couldn't do that to my family right now.

When the tempo was much higher a few years back and all branches were hurting for people they would sometimes waive the felony depending on what it was. But now we're looking at a military that is starting to draw down and do things leaner. Hate to say it but with your age and a felony its just not gonna happen.
The Army might take you, but expect your enlistment to be on their terms and that means infantry.

You can scratch that off your list. The AF will not accept anybody that's EVER been arrested, regardless of what you did or what you want to go into. I was going to join at 23 when there were no jobs and I had a wife and kid to support and tested in the 99.5%ile and when it came time to fill out the paperwork and I told them I had a DUI at 18, the guy just shook me off and told me, sorry, "we don't accept anybody that's ever been arrested, even if you were exhonerated".
Took me right down to the Navy where I aced the test to go into nuclear engineering, but I backed off because there was no way I was leaving my Wife (ex) on a Navy base for months at at time.
I wish now I would've done it.
Check, because the other branches all have different requirements when it comes to backgrounds.

Hate to say it, but like others have mentioned, if you don't get ur record fixed you wont be hired by anyone (that pays well). And, from my own personal history, military training (even with an A &P) will only get your foot in the door. No matter how many years of military exp you have, you'll be paid as entry level.

But if you really want to do it, I say go for it! I love my job, I get to work on cool sh!t everday!

Thanks S76 mech! I would love to have that feeling. I'm still going to "Go for it" and try to do anything I can to get that offense cleared. I think I'll have the time to do so while in a training school. Thank you all for the responses. This has really opened my eyes to whats ahead.

Well being that I was Navy for 11 years before making the switch to the AF I can tell you that even if you rocked the asvab they will not take you. My buddy had a felony for cocaine and he scored 98 out of 99 (I was with him when he took it) and they said no way once he told them.

You for sure scratch the AF, Marines and the Coast Guard off the list. As I said, the only branch that might still offer waivers for felonies is the Army.

I think its damn shame that they won't offer some people a chance, especially for young first time offenders. A lot of times one enlistment will straighten knuckleheads out and put them on a good path.
