So I was flying today tweeking the heli.
Took the canopy off an the heli felt so much lighter.
I could throw it around like it was 2 pounds...
This is a trex 600 nitro..
Am I the only one?

I don't think canopy weight would make that much difference...

Only helis I have noticed it on are 450 size and especially 200/250 size.

Too hard to see the model and see what it is doing or what attitude it's in without canopy for me.

The canopy can create drag thus inducing that extra weight feeling....

I would also check the canopy for weights... ahaha ( that a good one ! )

it does feel quicker flying it naked....maybe because its not acting as a parachute in backwards flight? it also doesnt eco as much so its cooler sounding.

on a poor mans mind: if i crash its $90 less for a new one

Ahh, Logo canopies wrap around .

Canopies can actually save your heli from a lot of damage, although I guess sometimes canopies can cost more than what is saved, I vary rarely fly without one though, perhaps when setting up someone else's.

The lower drag in flight helps too.

I can tell a difference without a canopy. I dont fly with my canopy unless its for a show or what ever. I can tell it adds a little drag.

I don't fly with a canopy except on my 450 or smaller. Saves on broken/cracked canopies. Besides, makes repair easier (at lest that's my excuse).

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

My eyes will not allow me to fly without the lid.lol...

It might save $90 in a crash but it would more likely cause the crash

You would honestly have to have a terribly heavy canopy to notice a difference. Aerodynamically speaking, with a canopy on, you actually get less drag overall, so the "weight" you're refering to is all in your head (figuratively speaking). In very few and extreme cases in reverse flight, yes the canopy can add a little bit of drag, but only at ridiculously high speeds. If you're doing a hurricane at 70mph+ I could see the need/desire to fly without the lid, but otherwise the cons majorly outweigh the pros on that one.

I also agree that the lid does actually add some armor to your machine. I've had plenty of crashes going both hooded and naked and it's by far worse when you hit the ground sans-canopy (or at least all of mine were worse) Especially if you slide or do it inverted/nose-down. You can't help but scrape your electronics right off the tray in that orientation. with a canopy on, it actually acts like a helmet and the heli will roll off or take the brunt of the hit and a lot of your stuff survives. Dunno about you guys but a $35-$85 canopy is a lot cheaper than a $200-$350 BeastX or Vbar unit and I've seen plenty of them smashed up to know it does happen!!! Just my take on the matter. Some prefer to go topless :P

Could the heli also have been getting low on fuel which helped make it feel lighter?

The canopies do actually weigh quite a bit and I can tell the difference in the air but its not THAT much different.

60% of the time, it works every time!

What's a quantitative number though? 2-5oz's? 10oz's? I could certainly understand if it were upwards of a full pound, but that's not very likely the case (depending on the designa dn shape of the canopy). I still fly a plastic canopy on my nitro and the feel with/without the canopy doesn't even put a dent in the way a full -VS- epmty tank feels. Even then, if you have your COG set up right, you won't even really feel that unless you;re leaning out really bad and getting a bit more punch out of your motor.
