That is just plain wrong! Don't do it, unless you want to take the chance of killing someone when a servo finally smokes.

The DS8717 has an HV version - if you like the 8717, buy the HV version.

Anyone that says 6v components (servos, gyros, governors - etc) will run on straight LiPo voltages are not helping anyone.

the 8717 can handle it. there are many, many pilots that have been using them on hv for years now.

if you have money to burn then get new servos.

You obviously dont know what your talking about. I have a set going on 3 years now on 8.4V tried and true voice of experience here.

Flyfish is correct, there are many many pilots running them, and as for killing someone,,, a bit dramatic

You are wrong - period.
Its like saying "I drive 100MPH through a school zone everyday, and I've never killed anyone".
Yet.

Just because you haven't had a problem doesn't make it right. And, one day, it will be a problem. And you could kill someone.

if wasting your money makes you happy then go for it? jr 8717 servos are not the only servos that people are running on 8.4V
at first futaba bls servos were not recommended for hv and now they are? people are also using some align servos on hv for a long time without a problem?

if it makes you feel safer and all warm and fuzzy go for it.

Getting back to the original thread:

First of all, you are doing the intelligent thing. If you want to use a LiPo flight pack, go with HV servos.
Don't let anyone tell you differently.

Checkout the servo database.
http://www.servodatabase.com/servos/outrage

The Outrage servos are pretty good. I've never used the HV version, but Outrage has a pretty good reputation.

Price-wise, they seem to be in the ballpark of the Futaba servos.
The biggest difference between your existing DS8717 and an Outrage is the torque - if that is not a factor, then you should be okay with the Outrage.
If you need the torque of the DS8717, but can't afford the price tag of the HV servos there are other low cost, good, regulators that have some neat features.

Which Futaba / Outrage servo were you looking at?

I use the "Perfect Regulators" Speklin linear regulator with my DS8717 / DS650 / DS610 servo set.
For me, a good regulator was a very cost effective - AND SAFE - solution for a LiPo flight pack.

I called Horizon tech on the High voltage through an std 8717 question. And they stressed not to do it as they are not designed for it and will eventually fail.

I don't claim to know much on the matter. Only relaying what the "experts techs" told me.

Thats understandable, but the reason they tell you that is because telling you otherwise would be telling you to void your warranty. Imagine if they started to get back servos saying "John from your tech dept told me I could" he would be in some deep shi..

They have no choice but to say that, its all about CYA..they also want you to buy the new servos, its a sales tactic.

If you are buying new servos, by all means, just get the HV version, I am not suggesting you don't want to. But if you want to run 8.4V through an 8717 they will handle it fine. Again, I personally have 3 years and hundreds of flights on multiple sets with no failures. Seems like unrefutable evidence to me, but hey to each his own. I'm talking about sponsored pilots doing it as well.
