Is anyone succesfully downlinking the image the camera sees (for steering the camera mount purposes only NOT recording) from a camera with HDMI (digital)output?

All of video downlinks that are used for AP and AV in amateur class are analogue. Cheapest digital tranmitter and receiver will cost around 6000 USD (let me know if someone knows cheper options). You will not even find any pricing on internet since those are pro grade solutions.
The best you can do is buy video signal converter that will convert HDMI to analogue signal that then can be transmitted by analogue video transmitter. It will cost from 50-300 USD depending on manufacturer, simply google for it.

But I doubt that there are any small video cameras that don't have direct analogue output. Even my small Sony Bloggie has analogue out with included cable adapter.

You can find wireless HDMI transmitters for about $500 but they are only good out to about 50-100 feet.

Currently the best video camera in the industry for under $5,000 does not have live analog out.

Are you talking about the FS100?
the specs say Composite Out... Is it not live? Or are you talking about something else?

I might call it the best for under $2000. Of course the fs100 isn't really under $5k...

Didn't realize it was lacking there. I remember the old days with the GH1... with no live output AT ALL. WTF were they thinking...?

the down link in my gallery works well. fairly ordinary. can be had anywhere between $70-130. works well with the gopro for live feed.
