Dear Buddies,

I am Mr Lee here, an avid RC Modeler for more than 20 years till recently.

As we all know, nitromethane and methanol is poisonous and highly toxic, causing blindness and death.
10ml ingestion will summon death.

Everytime after run, sure we get red eyes, coughing and itchy skins.

A few years back, OS has designed bio-ethanol engine, but bad news is for airplane only.

Any expert buddies out there know any 0 % nitromethane ethanol fuel composition or alternatives for nitro fuel ?

Most of time I play Nitro RC Car and at times Nitro RC helicopter.

Thank you.

Regards,
Prof. Lee

I believe its called gasoline, or more accurately Coleman fuel. I don't think 10ml of methanol will kill you, however. The LD50 has to be more than that.

fwiw..

I'd suggest a gasser....

Most biofuels seem to have too little energy/Kg to be effective for model use...Or, better yet...Go electric!!

Nitro does get absorb threw the skin and it is not healthy. Another good reason to fly electric.

Of course, the key here is to NOT DRINK the stuff.

And if you drink too much water, that will kill you, too.
Nitro does get absorb threw [through] the skin
I don't bathe in it either.

Gasoline was suggested as an alternative fuel, but it seems to have the same bad characteristics as Nitromethane and alcohol, drinking it can kill you, and bathing in it is not healthy.

Coleman fuel isn't gasoline, but is a petroleum distillate. It, too, is not recommended for drinking OR bathing....

If you're looking for an alternative fuel, you at least should offer up some valid reasons.

Yes, electric power is a great alternative. But don't eat the batteries, or poke holes in them and rub the innards all over your body, that is bad, too.

Hilarious and true dk

Even the part about the water.
We had a radio show around here offer a new X Box to whoever could drink the most water and a girl died as a result.

Think of how many old plank pilots there are out there that have been flying nitro all there lives. They are still here. It is not an issue.

"Everytime after run, sure we get red eyes, coughing and itchy skins."

Really? I have never had this happen or heard of anyone complaining of this. Maybe you should keep some more distance between yourself and the model.

Suddenly, nitro fuel is a deadly toxin.

There is a plank fuel with zero nitro, I think it's called "FAI fuel" if memory serves.

Our exposure to it in our hobby is so limited I don't think there are any side effects.

Look at the guys that race full size nitro drag cars.

Talk about living and breathing the stuff. Have you ever been in the pits when they start one and just idle it?

Gag a maggot.

I have never heard of any of those guys dieing from nitro exposure.

Thanks, TheWoodCrafter

Just love being there.

By the way according to the State of California everything causes cancer.

I looked it up:

The oral LD50 for nitromethane in rats is about 950mg/kg. Considering a density of 1.13 and a 90kg man, you're talking about drinking about 75mL of the stuff.

The oral LD50 for methanol in rats is about 5600mg/kg. Considering a density of 0.79, you're talking about drinking 637ml of the stuff.

The amount of methanol and nitromethane you'd have to spill on your skin to get the same exposure would be much higher. Still, I don't think either of these chemicals is particularly good for you.

But like dkshema said, don't drink it and don't bath in it and you wouldn't die from it.

Bio-etanol is the cleanest. But currently OS only developed till airplane stage.

Gasser is a good alternative. I wish to buy that too. But my concern here is, is it much noisier and more vibration ?

Electric is ok too. But, don last long ? 15 min ?
Currently the max mah is 10500 mah ? Hope technology advances it further.

I am choosing non-nitro heli for my next fleet.

I play electric RC car mostly for the moment. Replacing those sticky eye burning nitro.

Prof Lee
