I agree with your assessment. It's like when you go to the dealership and buy a brand new car--the moment you drive it off the lot the value drops precipitously. Sad but true.

Smart people buy used cars and used helicopters so that someone else can take the hit on the sticker price.

I personally never buy used helicopters because I don't want to go through the hassle of having to tear the entire thing apart, inspect it, and then rebuild it correctly. I can only think of 3 people I have ever met who I can actually trust to build an aircraft better then I can. CNCJunkie is one of them. But most people just slap stuff together and make a lot of mistakes.

I would have to say
That most likely this helicopter is well built. I know Justin is pretty particular and I believe he does good work building stuff. Sometimes he may go over the edge and add way too many nick naks or accessories and bling, but he likes bling.

To me this helicopter is like new hardly flown. I would think a fair price would be NO LESS than 50% of cost and that would be giving it away, and no more than 75% of cost. Somewhere in the middle there is where I would value it, and knowing the machine and the condition of it I'd venture to say it would be worth about 70% of cost fairly.

Trouble is, there are nick naks in there people may not want, which bring the cost up to $3800 (quite high due to the additions) and that is what makes it hard for someone to buy it with all those accessories. Someone will take them 'for free' if they are not calculated in the price, but they may not want to pay for them.

In any case good luck with the sale, if it doesn't go easy then you may want to take some accesories out and try to sell those seperately to lower the price.

Otherwise just buy a good motor for it and go, it will fly just fine I'm sure.

Before I start removing knick-knacks from the aircraft (the first being that expensive onboard generator), I am going to see if there is anyone out there who likes that kind of thing. I know for a fact there are some unique people out there in the world who like to have an onboard generators on their helicopter (and who use solar panels to charge their transmitter). I even know of people who count every one of their flights by hand (and who will probably someday want to get themselves an automatic hour meter like this helicopter has). So before I start butchering the helicopter and throwing out pieces which some people think are worthless (onboard generator for example), I am going to give people a chance to see it intact. As the saying goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure; and one man's treasure is another man's trash. I think the value of something is all relative. I've seen people pay thousands of dollars for a painting that I would have throw away.

I guess the way I see it, the helicopter has 0.6 hours on the meter and has been sitting on my shelf since 2008. It's paid for, so it doesn't really cost me anything to take the time to find the right buyer. Someone who appreciates knick-knacks. At the very least, I will butcher the helicopter and use the parts for myself. I could pull the Vbar + receivers + servos and assemble myself another electric 700. I don't mind 3 1/2 minute flights all that much.

Man, what a b-e-a-utiful heli.

This market sucks so bad and it hurts anyone to sell their babies, especially at what people are wanting to pay.

Good luck with the sale on a top of the line heli.

Mr Stuart,
Make this simple and tell us all what the right price
is that the right person will pay. No more pics. No more
Long explanations of how much you paid just what you expect.

Now if that can't be done it will be very difficult
for people like me who posted offers to understand why
you ever posted this model for sale.

The pull start has a metal pawl inserted so that you never have to worry about the plastic part breaking no matter how high the compression is on your engine. And of course, the pull start has stainless steel bolts. In fact, the entire aircraft has A4 grade stainless steel bolts everywhere except in key strength locations (such as set screws). This ensures that you'll never have to worry about rust or corrosion on the fasteners. With stainless steel bolts, there is never a need to apply oil to every bolt head every few months to prevent them from rusting like you must do with cheaper bolts.

I just laughed out loud reading this thread. As good as this heli looks I wouldnt even want to fly it. It looks the best just sitting on the ground or on a shelf in a MA museum if there was one. I would buy another used Spectra to fly. Very nice looking heli, Good luck selling it.

Wow ! the first time I've actually seen it as a whole ! Did see it one time with the light&#039
It's Pretty !

I guess the question is do you want to be successful with it or are you giving up tossing in the towel ?? I remember all your trial's -the bantering / disappointments and all that went with it along with the Salt Advice.

It's sure got some neat stuff on it . Did you ever try it with a basic 230 or 231 ?? with success?

I'm tossing in the towel on the Spectra. Just not worth the hassle anymore. There are others out there who are much more into the gasser thing then I am. Regretably, I am admitting defeat. I was never able to find an engine to try out, and I'm not willing to spend another $500+ on yet another modified engine to complete a helicopter I might end up flying once every few months.

I love flying my eAurora. I have been flying it almost every weekend for close to 2 years now. I just charge the packs and go fly. Thats my definition of happiness. The 3 1/2 minute flights just mean I have to get down to business right away before it's time to land. But it's better than the alternative.

EDIT: Some kind soul has offered to send me an engine to try out. So I guess maybe I'll try and fly this helicopter after all. Wow! Happy Tuesday

my father has never had a problem with any of his Hanson modded engines. You're going to take a bath. Better off to keep it.

It's hard to decide if it's worth "taking a bath" or not on the helicopter if I've never had a chance to fly it. When I bought the Spectra kit im 2008, my idea of what is "fun" was quite different than it is now. The idea of flying an underpowered helicopter that is only capable of gentle 3D maneuvers seemed quite appealing to me, but as I transitioned to high powered electrics and obtained various levels of sponsorship, my flying style changed dramatically. I have now developed quite an affection for the full-on 3D smack. In my mind, there is nothing quite a fun as flying from left-to-right at 90mph, doing a half-piro flip transition to vertical tic-tocs all the way across the field, rolling inverted to a full collective half-outside loop with a snap-roll at the top, followed by a 720 pirouette tail slide, etc.

You just can't do that kind of thing with a 14 pound gasser. Are there other fun things to do with a gasser? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not.

I've got a "modified 26cc engine" of unknown origin en-route to me now. I will send it to my gasser guru for examination to determine if it is any good. If he says it is good, I will mount it in the Spectra and see if I can get it to fly. If I can get a couple of flights out of the Spectra, that will help me decide if it is actually worth keeping, or if I should "take a bath" on it and move on to other things.
