I have had my needles at 1.5 for both for the last several flights and now I see that the manual for the newest motors recommends 1 1/4 for the low needle and 1 1/8 for the high needle plus or minus 1/4 on both.

What is right, the manual or common practice on here of 1.5 on both?

Depends on the carb that you have, but mine is at 1 1/4 low and 1 1/4 high and is still a little rich on my 290rc from Hanson

There is no numeric value you can place on right or wrong needle settings. Right = running good. Wrong = running bad

Flew it today at 1 3/8 on the low and the high. What a difference! It actually had a bit of pop to it when I gave it some throttle. It is still smoking quite a bit at idle and even a bit in a hover. I did some more hovering and slow flying around mixed with 1 minute cooling minute breaks in between.

I also noticed that with the needles at 1 1/2 I was going through a full tank of fuel in about 15 minutes. It seemed a little high and today at 1 3/8 on both I flew for 25 minutes and still had a little left in the tank.

Remember 990 carbs are different than 6xx carbs.

Needles on my 270RC are L 1.2 turns, H 1.1 turns. These values are similar to what the manual says. BUT they must more open while break-in.

I think I'll keep it at 1 3/8 on both at least until I finish the gallon break in. I still think it is a little on the rich side however due to the color of the plug and the amount of smoke it's putting out.

However I'm no expert and scared to fry an engine so I'll be taking it cautiously.

I set both mine right in the middle of where the instructions said, right from the getgo. I let it idle a tank or so. Then hovered a tank or so. Then flew the heck out of it. Till I had a "mishap". I will be running the 'heck" out of it again in the next week or two, when I get it all back together.
Running Penzoil outboard motor oil,5 oz to the gallon for now.
