They were originally made in the US. When Japan started making engines for the US market, they followed convention.

Not all. Some have metric threads.

I was speaking of nitro engines in general.

Of all the things in the world to collect, I think old model airplane engines would be pretty interesting. I wonder if there are guys who collect old heli engines to the same extent.

Yeah we know. It was self-evident in your posts. Just backing up dkshema...jgunpilot pretty much hit the nail on the head.

It is not just the cranks that are SAE.
The glow plugs on all brands of engines are also SAE, 1/4-32UNEF.

As was mentioned before, it is no reason other than the model airplane engine industry was started in the USA and other early entries into the market followed suit to have some level of compatibility. OS has been around for a long time and in the early days just followed suit with the parts that the US consumer had to interact with, namely the prop nut and the glow plug. the rest of the engine is all metric.
It is some of the newer engine companies that have just gone all metric, with the exception of the glow plug, but they came on the scene after metric was starting to be used in the USA.

What's funny is you still need a metric socket.
