Why in the world would anyone want more than a couple rc helicopters if they can't fly nose-in and fast forward at least. I know some people take longer to adapt to forward flight, I did it in a year, but two or three years come on. Over a dozen helicopters and still hovering tail in. Sounds like it time for a new hobby. Maybe golf, or RC boats.

Its the blinging and the high end gear on the 'tail in hoverers' helis that I don't understand!

Learning something new gives you 100 times the buzz of having expensive gear!

Some of the scale guys I know take up to a year to build a very, very, expensive and FLAWLESS scale ship and they have a "pilot" fly it!!! Some just enjoy the build more than flying them.

Yeah the build is a thrill, I get that. I doubt I'd ever build a scale ship, as I'd be to nevrvous to fly it, or trust anyone else too. Tail king of bling. Then flip flop on the drive-way.

Why bling out the tail, if thats all your ever going to see?

Don't try to figure it out. If they're having fun, that's all that matters.

I think the key to your answer is one word in your question: "want." You can't always rationalize what people want.

There's a guy in my club who likes to work on helis, rc cars and other things much more than he likes to fly. I asked him what he liked so much about building, repairing and modifying. He told me he quit smoking a few years ago. Working on helis keeps his hands busy and his mind off of wanting to smoke. More power to him.

Like Thumpernator said, it's about having fun. To each his own.

Barbie dolls are made for kids to play with. It is a toy. But, when you start to collect them, it becomes a hobby. Do you need to play with every one of them? NO!

This hobby is based on the WANT and not the NEED.

Heli Flyers
Heli Collectors
Heli Builders
Heli Crashers
Heli Upgraders

They are all equally valid and no justification needed.

Golf might not be an option. Most courses I know of have a dress code. They won't allow shirts with holes in them, and they certainly don't allow house slippers on the links.

However someone does their hobby is their business. If they are happy and not hurting anyone else, so be it. Me, I run the bare minimum of aircraft to get what I want out of the hobby.

My forty year old son collects hot wheels. In at least 10k. Big athletic guy, but he enjoys it. Whatever floats your boat. Doesn't really matter if others don't understand.
