What were the outside temps you were flying in to get 150-175 motor temps?

You'd have to double check with Mike at Aero-Model to be sure but all the Hackers I've run including the A50-12L and my current A50-14L have all run flawlessly. I did kill an old A20 in a 450 but that was after literally hundreds of flights (easy 700+). The helical gear will put stress (pull or push) on the motor shaft and is known to have issues with bearings in motors because of that lateral torque.

If you're good with mesh setup I'd maybe suggest you go back to a straight-cut gear. That will take care of the bearing issues. The issue will only be getting a good mesh so you don't rip them apart. If you decide to keep the helical gears you need to get the counter-bearing to carry that side load from the gear design. Either/or and you should see the end of your problems.

For motor temps run your Hassle at 18PWM and you will see lower temps on the motor. Timing can run something like 8-12 and you should be good to go. Call Mike and I'm sure they can set you straight.

Keep us posted.

@ Band1060 - The outside temps were 95 - 100 + degree in Texas. When we had a couple of cool (85 - 90) days, the motor came down around 135 ish.

@ RCSavager - So you are saying run the PWM at 18? I am currently at 8 right now!!

There may be some ESC settings that may help, but I don't think that's really out of line.

I wouldn't just straight to 18 really. Be smart and start moving it up. Basically you're talking to the motor more often. This cools the motor a bit AND gives you more power. The trade is that the ESC has to work harder. I wouldn't really suggest you prod your sparkler too much just to be safe until you know what it does for your setup.

Start with 12 and see how it goes. You should notice a bit more torque and less heat. Even with more power you still run cooler. It's a long story of why but this can be adjusted within reason. I would stop at 18 and get another motor if you have to go that far. Personally, that motor needs little pampering so try 12 and give it hell. Keep us posted.

You think the mesh could be too tight?

I don't think I have a really tight mesh. I did the paper thing and it seemed to work fine. I also did the adjustment after a flight so the gear was nice and warm. I just got the new bearings installed so hopefully weather permitting, I will test fly the machine tomorrow afternoon!!

Got the new bearings installed and all seems to be working very well. Mesh is good. Motor temp is average. ESC is 115 degrees. I bought an extra bearing "just in case" though!! LOL!!
