I have a 700LE running the Align regulator in pretty much a standard configuration. I have never had any issues with the electronics and the align regulator has been nothing but reliable for me.
After some conversations I was having it pretty much dawned on me that I could run most/all of the gear directly hooked up to 2S lipos and gain the power and simplicity of this. Is now becoming the norm? Are there any negatives to this approach? Any reasons to not do this?

My gear - All of which is rated at 8.4V?
Align 610/620's
Spectrum AR7000
Multigov Pro
BeastX

The only issue for me is the JR DS8900G tail servo. Its always been very good to me but if replaced I could go 2S the whole way. Has it really become that simple?

If it works (tail servo), I'd say leave it alone.
Just get a dual ch (they do not make real tail reg in single) tail regulator from any vendor.

Gryphon, JR, Spektrum, and WR make these. Do not use the step down diode for this as it only drops 0.7v.

Change out the 7000 Rx with a 7100 Rx and you are good to go

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! If your model is flying well, doing everything you ask of it, why mess with it? Yes, people are going to straight 6.6v LiFe packs, yes, people are going to straight 7.4+ LiPo packs, YES, people are staying at regulated voltage off of LiPo packs.

despite my sig, i have to agree with not messing with it if it works.

but, to answer a very specific question:
Any reasons to not do this?
with a 6v reg and an 8v pack, you'll always get 6v to your electronics. running straight 2s, you'll start at 8v. but, by the end of the day (providing you drain your packs down to 3.78v or so, you'll be running at 7.5v.

almost hardly worth mentioning. but, depending upon your skill level you may or may not feel the speed and torque degradation.

you can run a perfect reg on 3s and get a consistent 8v out of your system all day. but, then you're back where you started, running a reg, spending more money, and not simplifying your setup. i just wanted to answer the question.

leave it alone is my ¢2

if it ain't broke, break it.

The align servos work at 8.4, but are not rated for that voltage. I feel you push them too hard on HV, especially with FBL driving high frame rates. 2S A123 is the ticket for me. No reg, and a steady 6.6 flight after flight.

Another vote for the LiFe (A123 type or otherwise) packs. I've been running straight 2S LiFe on my T700 for over two years now with Align 610 on the swash and Hitec on the throttle/tail. Great combo. With the 3000mah pack I can safely fly 5-6 flights on a charge which is almost a gallon of flying and still have reserve on the pack.

Says in the specs that the AR7000 is good for 9.6v?

I would also be cautious running the 620's on straight 2s li-po, you can get away with it with the 610's but the 620 seems more highly strung, it is a geared up version of the 610 so is going to pull more current!

60% of the time, it works every time!

Well, I'm willing to bet he has 610's on the cyclic and a 620 on the tail. The 7100 has a reg inside it to regulate the tail down to around 5.8 so the tail would be regulated and the cyclics would run on the lipo. It dosen't matter what the 7000 is rated for it dosen't have a reg in it.

thanks guys,
no 8900 is on the tail. 610's all around the rest of the heli.
I could get a 7100 and regulate the tail, or replace the tail servo with something HV and stick with the same system.
