just bought a ion-x2 here in the classifieds. does anyone know which miniature canopies i can make work? i'm guessing the stratus, fury, and tempest lids will work with some minor drilling (maybe not). what about the newer whiplash lids?

thanks

I will check the Ion 2 canopy against the Tempest canopy tomorrow for you if no one else answers.

I would think somebody on here has one to sell, maybe one of the canopy painters.

I just ordered a couple of canamod Ion-x canopies (fit Ion-x and Ion-x2) from QuickUK (same ones at helidirect were sold out) for ~$40 each (plus $30 shipping, same shipping cost for one or 2 btw).

https://www.quickuk.eu/cat/canomod_...ml?currency=USD

I don't really know what the quality of these are like but the price is very good for a finished canopy imho. Guess I'll find out soon.

You can also order blank Ion-x canopies from MA for ~$70;

http://www.miniatureaircraftusa.com...emart&Itemid=82

With a bit of work you probably could fit other MA 90 sized conopies onto the Ion-x/x2 but these would be a lot heavier (~+120g). I've always thought that the Ion-x canopy was one of the best looking canopies out there.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
TomC

while others may fit, the original Ion X looks great on it, the Ion X even though it was a early design and packs were limited in size to fit and COG I did like my Ion.

...Once upon a time there were Nitros, flybars and frequency pins...

I just received my two canamod Ion-x canopies from QuickUK (~8-9 days delivery). Both of these are very good quality imho. About the same quality as the last Arizona Heli Canopy I bought (before they went out of business) and about 1/4th the price.

Both these canopies weight ~ 220g (~ 5g less than the Arizona one) but the paint and canopy seems to be a little more flexible, which is a good thing if you are trying to stuff oversized batteries under it.

The original MA Ion-x Canopy is a quite a bit lighter, only ~ 115g. If you only paint the windscreen and put on the decals, it's only ~ 125g. However, the MA Ion-x canopy is not very strong so you will damage it very easily imho. Still, I like to use the couple of old MA ones I have for practice sessions. I did have one professionally painted with flexey paint (like bumpers on cars) and this only weighs ~150g. Cost me ~$150 but the colours were pretty dark, not bright fluro, like I requested.

Like most non-align canopies, you need to align/drill the holes and/or supply your own canopy rubber grommets btw.

Cheers,
TomC

thanks for the update. i will be buying those soon. actually i may buy a couple of each. i'd think they would be out of production soon with the whiplash arriving.

btw, are you able to clear the batteries with these canopies? when i owned an ion-x1 i wasn't able to fit my lipos within the canopy very well. did you have to trim the battery tray standoffs?

thanks again

All I've done is add a ~1-2mm washer to each of the front canopy supports. So far this has allowed me to put in up to 5s5000mahr ~41mm wide (eg. Turnigy 5s5000 25C-30C packs), no problem. It's a tight fit mind you.

If I want to go to higher S (I've done up to 15s) packs on my Ion-x, I just add them in series behind these.

Cheers,
TomC
