I was flying my heli and all of a sudden the engine quit --was able to auto down--running a os 50 hyper --when i took the engine apart the piston had a hole in the top....so i replaced the piston and ring...the very next time i flew the heli (its was flying good too)---the SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN!!....does anyone have any idea as to what causes this...i do want to say that i was running the cy 30% fuel and never had a problem...I switched fuels...coolpower 30% and thats when this problem occured....switched fuels because local hobby shop didnt have any cy fuel in store...also want to add the engine was NOT running lean or hot...checked with temp gun....thanks for any replys or ideas......joe

The simple answer is that you were running it too lean.

Sorry but if you smoked a hole in the piston you were running lean.

Whether it was from an airleak or not richening the mixture with a new fuel, it was lean and thats what causes it.

Also make sure that you don't use a piston stop tool to lock the engine when putting the fan on. It'll weaken the piston and make it easier to pop a hole in it. I agree though, detonation due to lean running = hole in piston.

sure sign it was running lean, and probably the same reason it was putting out so much power before it blew.

also air temps can play into this. I had a lean run a few years ago because I went to fly when it was 25 deg F. outside. Engine was stone cold but it was running lean - so much so that it didn't recover from a bog and heli fell from 25' with almost zero headspeed, engine at full throttle but not stepping up due to fuel starving. Plastic frames shattered on impact (right on the skids). hit hard enough to snap the starter shaft in half (!!). Moral = case temp is really only partially valid on warm days and the best way to tell a lean run is the way it sounds. Smoke = not good way to tell either because that depends too much on the fuel type.

yup, every time the weather conditions change a retuning is in order!

what plug were you using,

how many turns open are you on the needle valve (high), have you changed the mixture control valve (low)

you experienced what is called pre-ignition, just want to rule out if it was due to a long term detonation condition.

Moving forward I'm sure you don't want this to happen again

aside from the gaping hole in the piston head, describe what the rest of the piston head looks like, or if you can, Take a close up picture.

also take a look at the clunk line inside the tank. could have turned to goo causing lean run.

What plug are you using ?Too lean ,be sure to tune without gov or limiter act , too hot of plug or turbo plug , using piston locking tool .Fuel change will change tuning but not cause this , cool power and CY are not far off so little difference in tuning .

I stole it ,flew it and gave it back ;)

General rule of thumb is that if you change fuels, brands or nitro content, you need to retune your motor. Different fuels have different oil ratios etc which will effect the performance of the motor.

New fuel = go back to factory needle settings and tune from there.

http://www.contactmagazine.com/Issu...gineBasics.html Now you know not to go by a temp gun, it does not tell you what is going on in the cylinder.

I had a problem going lean on my vel50/os50 started great with full tank and after it got to half it started going leaner and leaner finally found it. It was the presure line coming off the muffler had a crack in it. I replaced the line and it runs great now.

You engine must sound working very hard to keep up with it, and you must have felt your heli having tons of power.

Turning your needle in will only "smoke" the engine and burn it up. Out or counterclockwise is the way to make more smoke as you are richening the mixture.

A good day flying is when you come home with everything in one piece

Are you sure? Come on now. I had to discuss this same issue with a local club member this year who burned a perfect hole in the center of the piston, same reason, TOO LEAN.

too lean may be true,,, may not too, remember the OS 70,, their were complaints there without lean runs

Joey, you need to reply again,

A) did you run your engine too lean ??

B) or did you use the Piston Locking Tool when mounting your Clutch ??
