DJI are beta-testing the Naza-H. It is supposed to be a low cost stabilisation unit for 3D and scale helis. Does anyone have more information about it?

I have been beta testing the Naza H since IRCHA. I am a getting ready to film a test flight to share with everyone.

Naza H operates similarly to the Wookong-H. Feature wise, it differs from the Wookong in that it does not include governor capability and camera gimbal stabilization. It otherwise works about the same.

The Naza incorporates the IMU and flight controller into a single box, instead of two like it is on the Wookong. GPS is still a separate module.

They changed something with the GPS module so it can get a satellite lock significantly faster. I am finding it takes about 30 seconds now instead of about 1.5 to 2 minutes.

Lack of governor built in means that it requires you have your own governor. If you have an electric heli, then you need to use governor mode in your ESC. If you have a gas or glo machine, you'd need an external governor like a Futaba GV-1. You must have some form of governor no matter what.

Over the course of about 1 minute of trying to hover without any movements, I have noticed a tendency for the heli to have slight nose right yaw. Given the crudeness of the tail linkage, I have adjusted the nominal tail pitch to be about as good as it gets manually to overcome inertia. Like on all of my controls, I rely on manual setup above all else and use zero radio trim everywhere so as not to "fight" the DJI. Since I am in DJI manual mode and using heading hold, maybe this slight drift is something I just need to fly. But I was wondering...
Can I up the gain on the tail thru the DJI software to try to make it correct better? I think I recall some instructions about up'ing the gain until it wags and then backing off but thought I'd just ask your input. I admit, if I have to read that manual one more time I think I'll puke.
I have found the heading hold to be quite good. It can hold my helis pointing in the same direction for the entire flight if I let it. So call that 9 minutes. You can certainly get drift in rate mode, but I really haven't encountered it in heading hold mode. The gain will either improve or induce tail wag. It won't really be helpful for making the tail hold position. Do make sure to calibrate the magnetometer. This is the calibration where you flip the mode switch back and forth 10 times, then you rotate the heli 360 degrees in the horizontal and then vertical orientation.

If that does not fix it, then make sure your heli is not vibrating excessively, i.e. balance your main and tail rotor assemblies. Verify that you're getting good tail control in manual mode with rate mode. Then try your heading hold again.

I am looking forward to fit DJI Wookong H on my turbine Ecureuil 350. 2.5mt. do anyone knows if these giant Hellis will be satbiliszed, and one other thing the problem is with the GPS were to put it cause i don't want to loose the scale of my helli.
The Wookong will do an excellent job stabilizing your large heli. I have used it with great success in my 40 pound Air Crane.

I put the GPS inside the tail of the Air Crane, so it was well out of view. It can certainly be hidden under fiberglass. It will see the satellites just fine. You can test the position easily, by mounting it in your test position, then take the heli outside and let it acquire satellites. If it fails to get a satellite lock, you know you have a bad spot.

They caution you to put the GPS away from metal. So do your best to locate it away from metal. If you have it near metal, at least make sure it is not underneath a sheet of metal. Again, test your proposed location to make sure it gets a satellite lock.

Naza-H
Joel, glad you were picked to do beta testing.

Does the IMU (now located in the main box) have the barometric sensor hole and work the same as the separate WK-H's unit? Or is it soley using GPS for the altitude hold along with positional holds?

I also noted that DJI did not recommend the Naza-H for large scale heli's or anything over 600 size. Is this still the case? What is you testbed(s)? Do you anticipate that single or multi waypoints will be added either to the WK-H or the Naza-H to make one more attractive over the other?

Thanks

Yep, it's all fun and games until you get a SD-card error on a Wookong-H (which does not have a SD card) with poor tech support, leaving you with a $1500 anchor on your gasser.

Brant rant
What the heck are you talking about? Never heard of this. How did you get this SD error (by what means of notification)? Tell us more. FYI...no gasser...no $1500...and hardly an "anchor". I know this is a political year (lots of exagerations) but I'm thinking you must sell the competition?

Staying objective, honestly can't say DJI support is stellar but it has been there for me about as good as the rest of the industry. I must still be in the fun and games part. Ha.
