Yep! Massive 15 car accident, all because 2 cars' tires touched. He was only 33.

RIP Dan Wheldon.

Attended the Indy 500
I was so happy to see Dan Wheldon win the Indy 500 this year. A friend and I attended a race we've always watched on TV together, and one I hadn't been to since 1983.

Today's accident was terrible and I'm so sad to see that Dan was killed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, his two little sons, and to the rest of his family. The racing world lost a great one today.

I don't follow IndyCar Racing like I used to so I was really surprised to find out that a 2 time Indy 500 winner and this years winner didn't have a full time ride and this was just a one off ride for this last race of the season.

Just really tragic.

I was watching the race when it happened. You immediately knew it was a bad crash.

I use to attend the IRL races yearly, turned the race on 1 hr after the accident, knew something was wrong because of the demeanor of the announcers and drivers. At over 200 mph the cars are projectiles with no control when they break loose. If I am not mistaken one of the in car videos they are showing is Dan Weldon's. Tragic.

My wife and I watch the tribute and sign off from the network. We had tears.

RIP Dan Wheldon

Although this is a tragic loss I don't agree with the decision to not complete the race.
All the drivers know and understand the risks, death and injury are part of the game and the rewards for facing these risks can be great.
I remember watching the Indy 500 as a kid and death was much more of a factor than it is today as the cars and tracks are much safer now.
But never did I see a race not finished because of a fatality.

What's with the fireballs? I thought they had foam in the tanks so that it would not erupt into flames like this? And what happened with the little "capsule" that holds the driver? I remember this kind of thing happening in the 1970's, but I thought safety had improved so much by now.

In the videos Wheldon's car is the one that hits the fence where the red OREILLY sign is. His car hit the fence with the cockpit head first.
