Does anyone know of a CNC machine that is not the size of a small car, that can be used just for small hobby parts and such? Does one exist like the smaller hobby lathes and drill presses?

I just started the same journey as you. After much research, I'm an engineer - can't help it, I decided on the Grizzly G0704:

http://www.grizzly.com/products/G0704

I decided to convert it to CNC using the guidance from a gent whom has done it already to a few machines. He outlines a number of options and even offers plans for sale:

My mill is back-ordered until the end of October. I have purchased 90% of the components to convert to CNC - hopefully it will all come together.

Good luck.

I recommend the build yourself to guys that kind of know what they are doing. I built 4’ x 4’ (see my gallery). It took way longer than expected and the “little things” cost a lot.
A retrofit to a small mill is way easier.

All of the tiny lathes and mills are now available with CNC - Taig, Sherline. Very expensive for what you get.
