I just purchased a 550e 3gx that uses 6s batteries. I eventually want a bigger heli like a 700. It seems like the more I use the search function the more confused I become. I need a new charger for these large packs, but I'm not sure what it is I need. I like thunder power products, so naturally I looked at the TP820CD charger. It looks like people are using server power supplies in order to power this charger. Have things really gotten that complicated with charging? The only power supply I have is my old 30A supply that I used back when I was racing radio controlled cars 10 years ago. In short, I don't know what I need. I will be running 5000mah TP 6s packs. I only need to charge one at this time, but eventually will be using 2 for the bigger heli. What do you guys think I should get? Do I need to look at buying one of these outrageously priced server power supplies? Thank you in advance to anyone that answers.

i think people are using the chargers so they can charge around 24v input to the charger and helps charge battries faster, like 2 6s 5000mah packs in 20 to 30 minutes. You can't charge that fast off a car battery but i had to buy a generator. i run the Thunder power charger with to power supplies in series, each cost 86 bucks works great i'll never go back to a smaller charger. but it is what works for you. It all comes down to the time you want to spend charging.

I have about $255 in my charging gear.

That is a 1000Watt charger and a 24V PS.

Do I need to look at buying one of these outrageously priced server power supplies?
They are cheap.

Surplus servers purchased from eBay or any surplus electronics source on the internet. A little labor, some soldering wires and a few connectors. These make really good DC power supplies.

Cheap

A good high out put charger with a parallel charging setup and you are good to go.
You will be able to charge up to 6 - 6S 5000mAh batteries with a Paraboard or something similar.

This link may work a little better.

Here is my version of a charging box. Utilized a pair of Dell 6650 PSUs that are outputting 24V and 1800 watts.

Tom,

That is a great looking charging case but the fact that it's completely made of metal scares me. Accidentally shorting a 6s 5000mAH pack would be EXTREMELY bad.

That's why I went with a plastic Pelican 2450 storm case.

Just be REALLY CAREFUL!!!

To make a suggestion for the original poster, take a look at the FMA PL8 or Hyperion Super Duo.
