I thought I read somewhere that I should use KSA mode with Hacker motors, is this true? Just want to make sure.

I'm running the 80HV with Hacker Turnado 470kv. On my E6, it worked great in Mode 4 but when I converted to E7, started getting ESC shutdowns during very moderate climbouts. The Jive was flashing 8 times after it shut down, indicating overcurrent.

I switched to KSA mode and it seems to have fixed the issue. Runs great with loads of power and everything is cool!

I talked with Kontronik about this, and with some motors the freewheeling circuitry in Mode 4 can get out of phase causing a commutation error. Essentially the spinning motor becomes a generator feeding voltage back into the ESC causing damage. KSA mode limits the timing somewhat reducing this risk.

Interesting. Wonder why it only started happening to me when I put the 696mm blades on?

Although, now that I think about it, I did get a shutdown once before on the E6, but only once in over 100 flights. After the conversion, it happened every flight.

Do you happen to know which are the offending motors? I presume that you are referring to your Scorpion 4525, but is it better to use KSA mode for all Scorpion motors, or just for the higher powered ones?

If running KSA fixes the problem, I would stay with that. As long as everything is coming down cool and you are getting good power, you'll not hurt anything.

I've now put in around 20 flights with KSA mode but yesterday had it shutdown once again. Dissapointing because I thought that had fixed my problem...

You may need to get a JLog2 connected up to your Jive so that you can log the current, PWM, and temperatures of the unit.

My conversation with Kontronik about KSA mode was specific to the Scorpion 4525, but they said it applies to all motors which use a couple winds of large gauge wire vs. many winds of small gauge wires. The ESC must sense where the magnets are located at all times, and when you've got really large windings, the ESC has trouble figuring out where the magnets are. Thus the timing gets off and then you get commutation failures. KSA mode limits the timing to hopefully prevent this.

When you're running the motor in governor mode, you expect the motor to be running in a relatively narrow RPM range anyways, so there should be no downside to running your ESC in KSA mode.
