Just starting to play with the Skookum 720 with my T-Rex 600 ESP and three blade Skyhunterhobbies Sky-3 head (with Century swash and follower... Skyhunter swash was too loose for my liking, but the 3 blade head is nice). I'm using the Align BEC with 2C 1900 LiPo and CC ICE 100 ESC with a single 6S 5000mAh 30C LiPo. I have the extra "Power Bus" connected as the manual states and I have the jumper connecting the Low Voltage and High Voltage buses on the Power Bus...
So right now I have the SK-PW7 Power Bus as follows:

1) Jumper connecting both sides of the bus
2) I have the Align BEC connected to the IO-D port (guess any open port for power works?).
3) The CC ICE 100 ESC is connected to the IO-A(T) port (only port that an external ESC will connect to I'm guessing as it is the "throttle" port?)
4) Tail servo is connected to LV TAIL side (but I'm assuming HV side would work too as I'm only powering bus with the one Align BEC that came with the T-REX 600)
5) Servos are 120 degree config (1 servo in transmitter) with Left servo connected to SW-L and Right servo connected to SW-R and "rear" or center servo connected to SW-C.

I think everything is working correctly as I followed the tutorials to the letter... Leveled swashplate, have links at mid-stick zero pitch, reduced cyclic throw... Only have 10 degrees pitch, etc, etc), HOWEVER my CC ICE 100 ESC won't work. The ESC beeps only two times and then flashes red.

Right now I have "off" selected in the SK720 menu for Drive System... Is this the problem?? (Note: I've already set my end points and programmed the CC ICE 100 ESC independently of the SK720 setup via the Castle Creations software prior to playing with the SK720 software).
When I select "electric" in the SK720 menu for the ESC it asks for a RPM sensor to be connected?!?! That makes no sense to me? I'm ready to do the first test flight, but the ESC won't work (only flashes red on CC ICE 100).

ALSO... Right now I'm at 0 pitch for mid-stick collective (set on Scale flying in software), but normally "scale" flying means -2 pitch at low stick, 4 to 5 pitch at mid stick, and 8 to 10 pitch at top stick. How do I change mid-stick to get more scale flying pitch at mid-stick? I believe I'm supposed to set up everything in the SK720 software and NOT adjust pitch in the radio.

I've emailed Skookum and looked online for hours (even on the Skookum Wiki), but no luck so far :-(

Thanks,
David

A little more background:

I have two ICE 100 ESCs connected to my standard T-Rex 600 ESP setups using R921 receivers. Everything works well on both helicopters in governor mode and I'm very pleased (Jet Ranger body and AS-350 two blade).

I'm now working on my first multi-blade helicopter (AS350 3 Blade) and using the Skookum SK720 as my receiver with Spectrum satellites (x9503 radio). All of the mixing works in the SK720, however when I connect the main 6S battery to the ICE 100 it beeps 6 times and then flashes red? I have the red (middle) wire cut on the servo lead (servo extension wire connected to the SK720) as I'm not using the ICE 100 BEC, I'm using the Align BEC just like on my other setups mentioned above. I've tried doing fixed end points, etc, but nothing works. Same results every time... ICE 100 beeps and initializes just like my other ICE 100 ESCs on other helis, but then goes quick flashing red on LED. All my SK720 functions seem to work fine. Any suggestions???

Thanks,

David

I'm not 100% sure what I did, but here's a recap of what I was doing while emailing Skookum...

Skookum:
"Right now I have "off" selected in the SK720 menu"

Do you mean the governor menu? Setting the governor off should make it a normal throttle output.

Me:
In the Drive System tab next to Governor I have "OFF" -vs- electric or nitro. So with OFF my CC ICE 100 should act normally and in full control?

Also, here is the message I received from Castle Creations about my CC ICE 100 not working...

"A flashing red LED means the ESC is waiting for a low throttle signal to arm. On most transmitters low throttle is a 100% endpoint at the low stick position. With helicopter mixing, the ESC still needs to see this low throttle point to arm. Make sure the ESC is seeing the 100% low throttle signal to get it armed and started."

So obviously I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what. I've included a screen shot with low collective on the throttle. Is the throttle at -16% the problem?... I have the normal throttle curve, but it isn't perfectly linear from 0-50 out of 100. It has that small dead band for accidental stick movement (these are all the default settings, no trim, no expo, nothing other than factory defaults in the transmitter). Do I need to set my radio to idle 1, which is perfectly linear?

!!!! OK... Disregard everything above as I went to plug in my ESC after my BEC as you requested (which is what I do anyway) and I decided to make sure I had default throttle curve and then simply click on "set idle throttle" at low stick without throttle hold (which is what wizard was asking me to do) and then "set max throttle". Figured I'd try it this way for once. I let my SK720 power up and then I connected my CC ICE 100. The CC ICE 100 went through it's routine and then armed with a green light! Joy! The throttle did indeed work. So then I unplugged everything and set the fixed endpoints via the CC ICE 100 software. Then I went back into the CC ICE 100 software and changed from fixed endpoints to governor mode. Set my Normal at 1380 rpm, Idle 1 at 1420 rpm, and Idle 2 at 1480 rpm (seeing what works best with 3 blade head). Then I disconnected everything and plugged the SK720 back into the computer and then "set idle throttle" and "set max throttle" as I had just changed the endpoints in the CC ICE 100 (not sure if that matters, but reset the SK720 anyway). Unplugged again, and now it still works!

Of course tomorrow is windy (go figure), so I'll have to wait until Saturday to do a test flight or at least actually see if my ESC is working in governor mode.

Thanks for all your help!

David

To keep from having duplicate posts I've centralized the Skookum SK720 post to the ScaleRCHelis.com site. I've posted my complete series of screenshots and made a video of my setup, good or bad, for all to view. Hopefully this will help show how I'm setting up my first time, multi-blade helicopter build. Questions and issues will be resolved and posted on the ScaleRCHelis.com link as they are discovered and resolved. This may take time as I travel for work.

ScaleRCHelics.com link (description and video starts at 6th posting)...
